Web standards are important, of course, but one must bear in mind that the W3C standards are more like guidelines than actual rules. There are many instances where a website receives errors while being validated by the W3C, yet it still functions properly on many different browsers.

Color gradients are new to CSS3 and the implemented code is invalid according to the W3C validator, though color gradients have been used for a while now.

    • How was the Internet funded?

Development of the internet was funded by the U. S. Defense Department through the Advanced Projects Research Agency

    • For whom was the Internet first developed?

This is a harder question than it first appears.  The best I can tell is that it was a research project done by the defense department for scientific reasons (to be used by universities), and maybe also for purposes more directly related to national defense.

    • What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?

email, commerce, social networking, sharing information, education, video, music

    • What are Web Standards? Are they important?

Web standards are volunary "rules" that are established by the W3C for the implementation of HTML, CSS, and other technologies having to do with the Web.  They are important because if the standards are consistently followed, web developers will be able to make sure their websites will work on many different platforms without writing many different versions.

    • How was the Internet funded?

    • For whom was the Internet first developed?

    • What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?

Principalmente ha sido usada para la comunicación (emails, llamadas VoIP, videoconferencias, publicaciones de páginas web, buscadores, blogs, redes sociales, etc.)

    • What are Web Standards? Are they important?

    • How was the Internet funded?

It was funded by ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) after the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik I

    • For whom was the Internet first developed?

It was developed for US military

    • What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?

Communication mainly - VoIP (Voice over IP), other terms frequently encountered and often used synonymously with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Also multimedia - IMS (IP Multimedia Core Network Subsistem) etc.

    • What are Web Standards? Are they important?

Web Standards are like "rules" made by W3C for the browsers. These rules are quite basic, but they make sure that the user is more free to choose which OS to use, not losing the best experience possible.

It is very mportant to have these standards not only for the user best experience but also for developers, making code more simple, more available and easier to develop and design the Web

    How was the Internet funded?

US taxpayers dollars under the guise of military development.

For whom was the Internet first developed?

    the military

What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?

The internet and world wide web spread through universities use of the system. later as it became commercialized it spread even more.

What are Web Standards? Are they important?

Web standards are protocols that allow the open usability of the internets by any using a compliant browser. They are important in trying to allow as many people access to content without limiting thier choice of browser.

  • Teacherhax   Oct. 1, 2011, 3:14 p.m.

    • The internet was originally funded as a national defense initiative through DARPA.
    • The military was originally intended for the military to maintain communications capabilities in time of attack.
    • The Internet has gone from mostly a text-based means of communication to be a vector for multimedia files, interactive content, and porn.
    • Web standards are best practices to help coders and browser makers agree upon a shared language for the web. They are very important because they allow web consumers to have a consistently high quality viewing experience, while helping designers and coders reach the greatest number of viewers through compatible code.
  • Ross   Sept. 27, 2011, 10:51 p.m.

    How was the Internet funded?
It was funded originally by ARPA (later known as DARPA) which is part of the US Department of Defense.

For whom was the Internet first developed?
Originally the the Internet was used by the U.S. military, universities, and research institutions.

What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?
Streaming video and music, VoIP, etc.

What are Web Standards? Are they important?
Web Standards are the attempt to standardize development of websites so that they will be compatitible with all browsers and therefore veiwable by more users. That's the ideal at least. For those reasons Web Standards are very important to developers and end-users (whether they realize it or not).

    • How was the Internet funded? ANS:/ the internet was funded whent the USA department designed the ARPANET a network to intercomunicate military bases. before int 80's this was standarized by vinton cerf who created the TCP/IP
    • For whom was the Internet first developed? ANS:/ the internet was first developed by the USA defense department and before was standarised .
    • What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended? ANS:/ the internet since the WEB 2.0 extended to many areas of communication like VoIP, blogs, mail, vigilance, GPS, file transfer, services that make this the main service used by humanity
    • What are Web Standards? Are they important? ANS:/ the web standards are a set of protocols and norms used to make the use of internet widely spread by the use of the same protocols by everyone. the webs standards are important because make the communication over the internet the same for everyone leting to all people around the world communicate themselves without restrictions

    • How was the Internet funded?
The internet was funded by DARPA, a wing of the US Dept. of Defense, and later by NSF.
    • For whom was the Internet first developed?
The first users of the internet were the US government and research institutions, such as CERN and the University of Illinois.
    • What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?
One way I came across in my Wikipedia wanderings was Doctor Fun, an early webcomic. Years later, we have video, VoIP, all sorts of extensions to the internet's text-only origins.
    • What are Web Standards? Are they important?
The idea of an internet requires a common language for computers to communicate in. E.g. before the TCP/IP standard, we had plenty of networks in the world, but they were limited in scope compared to the network of networks that is the internet.

        How was the Internet funded?
ARPA funded the development of the software.

For whom was the Internet first developed?
The US Department of Defence / Military

What are some ways in which the Internet and WorldWideWeb extended?
    Multimedia, VoIP

What are Web Standards? Are they important?
Webstandards are definitely important. Having a standardized way of developing content helps both developers and end users.
Developers can work better together, progress faster, and make sure end users across different browsers can interperet content with ease.
