dScribe, short for "digital and distributed scribes," is a participatory and collaborative model for creating open content. It brings together students, staff, faculty, and self-motivated learners to work toward the common goal of creating openly licensed content available to everyone. It was first developed at the University of Michigan to join students with faculty and staff to transform educational material into open educational resources (OER). dScribe encourages anyone interested to get involved in not only creating open content, but also generating awareness about the benefits of creating and sharing educational content with a global learning community.

The most important step in creating open content is letting others know how you want them to use it. The easiest way to do this is to select a Creative Commons license for the material you’ve created. Use this guide to select a license or work with a member of the Open.Michigan team to determine which license best suits your overall goals.
