New revised version of my video tutorial "Introduction to Machinima and Virtual World TV" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlbb7q7w6zg Rather than throwing a bunch of tools at new machinima makers, I propose an easier onboarding process using livestream and youtube.

Replaced many clips and the entire narration. Had fun adding music to this!

Nice to have options.  I know  you described the process on a previous post here on P2P for the benefit of participants.  Thanks for sharing.

This sounds like a great week, and I'm sorry I'm missing it; most of my time and energy is going towards technical training this week, but I'll enjoy all of your exploits vicariously whilst lurking in the shadows.

Looking for Aly. Carl, Izzy Lotus, Aly and Penelope are a Machinima group and I managed to get everyone but Aly notified of our meeting time because I didn't have her last name and she had logged off (or crashed as I did Twice!). Aly, if you get this, please reply. We will be meeting 5:15 SLT at the set we first met at on Monday. Thanks!

I apologize, my computer was really messed up last night so I had to result to my laptop at the last minute. I couldn't even post to this page!  Now I have to reinstall all my programs so I had to leave early last night. Thanks for getting ahold of me.

I somehow messed it up.  TY for keeping me on my toes - or fingers in this case!  we will meet for about 15-20 minutes then head over to Montmarte

  • Gridjumper   March 26, 2012, 3:44 p.m.

As we meet with the Machinima Pros tonight (Monday) think about your questions.  What do you struggle with technically as a machinimatographer?  Don't be afraid to ask, you will probably get about 3 different answers.

Keep in mind our objectives may not be quite the same as those who are Machinima Artists...as educators

    1. we make machinma to help teach a concept
    2. we help our students make machinma to help them learn a concept

In the first instance the quality of the product is likely as important as it is to the Machinima Artist. In the second instance,  it is the process off developing 21st Centruy skills (Collaboration, Criticlal Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Life and Career skills, Information Media, Core Subjects) that is a priority.  Any thoughts?  Agree?  Disagree?

Hello Gridjumper and Fellow MOOCers! I really like your comment about 21st Century skiils. Agree!

On a related topic: I've been struggling with basic machinima skills for a while, I think one of the biggest obstacles are the unintegrated set of tools and freeware experts recommend, like on the SL Wiki Machinima page.

I have a proposed solution for brand new machinima students... currently my proposal is in the form of a script, which I want to make into a machinima. A 7 minute course called "Introduction to Machinima and Virtual World TV" Script Posted Here. Please share your comments: carlicann (at) gmail.com  ... Thank You!

    Gridjumper,

I am less than a novice in terms of machinima, but I have always wanted to learn.  You are right about educators thinking largely about using it as an instructional tool for students.  The extent to my "machinima" experiences have been to use screen capture software when I want to archive/record an event in Second Life.  This is how I produce video tutorials for my newbie students.  However, I have always longed for a "better way" or at least a way of finding out what other options there are.

I am looking forward to tonight's meeting because I do want to learn more.  I may never become an artistic genius with machinima, but I am hoping to at least learn some rudimentary skills.  With this in mind, I also want to thank Carl for his very useful link to Introduction to Machinima.  I think it's an excellent resource for people like me!

    Hi Grid,

Technical struggle: editing! It's the last skill I have been working on and it takes so much time and patience.  but if it is well done it can turn a simple recording into a glossy and elegant product!

I'd like to further explore  to what extent point 2,  " we help our students make machinima to help them learn a concept",  can  enhance students' learning.

I sometimes  imagine giving a class of English as a second language learners the task to make a machinima using simple present. Forgetting the third person S being one of the most common mistakes, I reckon  it would add so much extra practice whilst keeping  them focused on the problem....Going wild with imagination:  Have a tin on one side where to put a cent for every mistake, to be spent on party refreshments at the end of the project...would probably bring the class near a pharaonic party ;-D

I very much like the expression 21st Century skills, and I'd go deeper into the "Creativity" one: writing the story, the dialogues,  photography; designing of scenes, clothes, avatars; editing, choosing music...  All these passages of "learning by doing"  open up to an "effervescent" community, where to express personal identity  and enjoy learning.

Your Livestream and YouTube option for creating machinma is a great alternative.   I will be sure to add this alternative to the Machinima Livebinder.

The steps necesasry to create really don't change much ...whatever tools you use you need to

    1. have a story or purpose
    2. have a set, actors, costumes, props
    3. capture video
    4. edit video
    5. add audio
    6. add credits ( be aware of all Intellectual property)
    7. render and post

    Thank you for sharing.

    @Rosavioletta

The Machinima Monday Meeting is a standing meeting of a group - we are invited as guests to their regular meeting.  Once everyone starts filming and working together time is less important.  I can possibly arrange to come in earlier or have 2 times for our synchronous meetings on Wednesday 28 and Friday 30.  Let me know if that is benefical and I can arrange to be on at 3:00 SL time.  Really the earliest I can be on.  There are participants who have a lot of experience and could easily facilitate discussion at a different time...would you like to volunteer?
