Grafteful for you posting this link. Honestly, I never knew that about the site. I did think it was related to W3C. I started using it for the live code view, but will now switch to jsfiddle.

I think the point is that the W3schools is a wonderful resource, but they fumble on a few things which is why it should be more open source. W3 Schools isn't completely terrible you just have to watch where you get your informaiton from and always consider the source.
Being able to read specs is really important in my opinion. You dont need to be a spec ninja, just a few simple terms so you can access the right info. MDN is a great resource, but sometimes things are mistyped or worded incorrectly.
