DNS: Domain Name System, translates domain names to IP addresses required for locating services and devices. In effect it is a worldwide, keyword-based redirection service, it is not a necessity but most people would have great difficulty with Internet protocol addressing in its absence. It is much easier for humans to remember www.your-domain.com than 192.168.100.1:8080... and it very neatly ties into every little node of the simplest networks across the entire planet.
