Voltage and Graphs [Aug. 3, 2013, 6:34 a.m.]



Throughout AS physics you will be required to draw graphs.  This is particularly the case in your assessed practical work, and many marks are lost every year due to bad graph drawing practice. 

This task will help you understand what is needed for a successful graph, as well as showing how we can use graphs to determine relationships.

 

TASK 1

Watch this video which is an excellent summary of what is required, and what you should avoid when dealing with graphs at AS level.

 

Please note - this is NOT a good example of an Alevel graph!!

TASK 2

Click here to go to the circuit simulator and click run now.

Watch this video to see the circuit that you need to set up.

Draw a table with a column for voltage and a column for current.  If you want some guidance on good table practice you and watch this video.

Alter the voltage of the battery and note down the ameter reading.  Fill these data points in to your table and repeat for a minimum of 7 readings.

Draw a graph of current against voltage and draw your line of best fit.  if you do not have graph paper you can print some off here.  Remember to label your axes.  PLEASE DRAW A REAL GRAPH - YOU WILL NOT HAVE A GRAPHING PROGRAM IN THE REAL PRACTICAL!

What kind of a trend do you observe?  What is the explanation for this trend?  What would happen if you were to repeat the experiment with materials of a higher resistance?
