Research - Notice and Investigate

Analyze the reading you've done so far and begin to draw conclusions.

Before you do this task, make sure that you've completed your annotations and your Dialectical Notes for your research. If you're up to date, then take a moment with this task to step back and ask for helpful comments from other students on Youth Voices by creating a Discussion post about your research so far.

Reclaim your topic by posting a Discussion with transcriptions and citations from your relevant and reliable sources.

Ask yourself:

  1. What are the most important things I’ve come to understand?
  2. How can I use the information I’ve gathered to make those things clear to someone else?

Begin by writing about your research in a Google Document. Share it with your teacher and a few peers, and ask them to insert comments. Revise, proofread, and make sure you have cited your sources correctly, then post your writing as a discussion on Youth Voices.

Choose one of these two missions to complete this task:

Image for issue at Youth Voices

This mission is designed to help you write
another discussion post about your inquiry
topic. This might be your fourth or fifth
post on your question, and this won’t be
the last time you write about your question.
However, if you’ve been keeping up with your
annotations and your dialectical notes (see
Guides) as you do your research, then it’s quite
likely that the post you write for this mission
will elicit helpful comments from other students
on Youth Voices.

Five crescents - Wikipedia

Write a thoroughly researched post based
on your inquiry question. Your post must
have FIVE reliable sources and provide a
"Works Cited" listing all of them. Your
discussion post should draw on relevant
information from five reliable sources.
Sources should be cited in the proper MLA
or APA format at the bottom of the post. Use
 the Five Reliable Sources guide.

Copy the link for your Discussion Post into a comment under this task (on P2PU), then click  Yes I'm done .

I am in agreement with your post, because the fact that in certain schools there have been massacres where students and teachers have lost their lives when psychos come into those schools and openfire. If security guards were armed they could've put a stop to it instead of waiting for police to arrive and in the meanwhile innocent people are being hurt.
One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is “Others might say that security guards should not carry guns because students may feel unsafe, and other accidents may happen”. This stood out to me because if you're a parent you should know of these massacres that happen in certain schools & should want more protection for your child. Not many other accidents can happen with a security guard carrying a firearm that can't happen with a police officer carrying a firearm. If anything if the students feel unsafe with a security guard carrying a weapon on the side of their waist, like a police officer, then they should have multiple firearms somewhere in the school just to have just in case someone comes in a school open fires. This doesn't happen often but security guards need to be prepared in case it does occur instead of waiting for police officers to arrive, because in the meanwhile people will be hurt.
I do agree with what you quoted from the U.s News “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.” One reason i say this is because someone who is willing to put his life on the line to protect others from being harmed is a good person and we need those type of people as security guards in schools.
Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next because this is a topic that should be talked about more. I think that all school security guards should be armed because no one wants another massacre where children and teachers are killed. The children are innocent and i respect teachers because they aren't paid much, most times teachers are teachers because they truly want to help their students succeed otherwise they would use their degrees they've earned in other areas.

    http://youthvoices.net/discussion/should-you-drop-out-or-not

Something that i have interested  in learning more about is why do people drop out. I remember talking to my friends that dropped out about why they made that decision and if it was worth it .I didn't really listen because they was still enjoying life and getting money so i thought it may not be that bad if they still got money and are enjoying life. Lately the issue caught my attention because more and more of my friends were doing it and not thinking twice about it.What  i have heard about dropping out is that , dropping out its something people consider when they tired of all the stress or can't adapt to the learning environment. When people make this decision they often decide to change their mind at the end , later end up realizing that they made the biggest mistake of their life because sometimes is too late to go back and change your decision. For example, i’ve heard that young teens like to follow the crowd be noticed or just because they need the extra attention. These teens often decide to drop their education just to be down with the crew or down with their friends. What was funny to me was that i noticed that people follow the crowd and drop out just to look cool or fit in. Teens believe that as loyalty but where's the loyalty when you and your friends end up dead or poor in the streets. That is when people see who their friends really are because when you in need everyone shuts their door ,but demand a open one when they need help or support.
Life has many surprises, especially when you young. One thing that i know for sure about dropping out is that being a parent at an early age can lead to dropping out for a lot of teens.  Personally to me this is a lame excuse because it’s hard staying in school because you may not always have the support of others but sometimes you have to be strong and pick yourself up and push forward because not alot of people take steps back to stretch out a hand for you. Many teens start having sex more than they study because they just experience it so they want to keep on. later on they realize that they should have stayed in school when is too late and they are parents. When you're a parent you see how hard the struggle is to maintain your partner and your child especially if you do not have any support. That is when teens drop out end up with minimum wage jobs or in the streets hustling because they did not finish their education so they don't know how to do anything but have sex and chill.
After my research i was full of new knowledge in why do teens drop out. I seen all the reasons and not one is worth giving up your life for. Everyone has a story to why they dropped out but honestly i bet everyone that has a story to tell ,wishes that they didn't.

I started reading this article http://www.cec.sped.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home&TEMPLATE=/CM/Conten... The paragraph that called my attention and made me want to learn more was: "Students who drop out face a bleak future. Dropouts are more likely to be unemployed, live in poverty, receive public assistance, become incarcerated, are unhealthy, and become divorced and single parents with children who drop out from high school themselves, according to the report". This made me want to read more because what the article is saying is true. Many dropouts end up in the streets stealing or surviving. Others are stuck living with someone from their family or shelters. In this world there are also people who are very successful and rich even though they dropped out of school. I also saw a video that made me realize the variety of people and the reasons why some people drop out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fihzt1NBkP8&list=PL657F5E4932652EE5

Many kids now a day think life is easy and that they can continue getting money in the streets or illegal ways because it is fun and easy. Some kids drop out because they want to follow their friends and cut school or stop coming. There is also many times where students drop out because of bullies or because they find a job with a big pay and they think they could live of that forever.

what makes me interested in this topic is how someone can be so violent toward minors the ages of 7 and 8 and go on a shooting rampage. The way i heard about this problem was though my daily fox news broadcast on my cell phone also i heard about this on cnn news. i think others think this was an horrible thing to happen to our country and  how there was no security or fast response after the situation occured. Others think this was a setup for more gun control for our country because no one has a lead on what the suspect was doing this for or the cause, and others think adam lanza was just a crazy person.

what i know about this horrible shooting is adam lanza could've been a crazy person. He shot twenty children, six adult staff members and wounded two at sandy hook elementary school in the town of newtown connecticut also before incident he shot his mother in the head. When responders arrived adam lanza committed suicide. this was the second most deadliest shooting in our country. The first was virginia tech.weapons that was recovered at the school after his death was bushmaster xm-15 which is a rifle, 10mm glock 20  handgun, 9mm handgun, and a shotgun found in the perpetrators car.

The information that the first source provided me was the actual story to adam lanza homicide. Before 9:30 am on Friday Dec 14 ,2012 Lanza  shot his mother Nancy Lanza with a rifle at their Newtown home. Adam lanza then drove to Sandy hook elementary school then shot open the locked glass doors infront of the school. Lanza was wearing black clothing and a mask. the principal dawn hechspring and school psychologist Mary sherlach where in meeting and heard shooting though the school intercom morning announcements. They rush to where the shooting was taking place. when approaching Lanza, he shot both women dead. Natalie Hammond the vice principal and lead teacher pressed against the door to keep it closed. Hammond was shot from the other side of the door hitting him in the arm and leg.Teacher Victoria Soto try hide the kids in closet and cupboards Lanza entered Soto room and fatally shot her. lanza stopped shooting between 9:46 and 9:53 after firing 50 to 100 shots. all victim were shot multiple times Lanza then shot himself in the head as first responders arrived to the school.

The second source of information that was provided to me was the the new york times gun control. This has a lot to do with the sandy hook shooting because lanza was able to obtain multiple guns and no one was really aware of his possessions. Supporters of stricter gun laws gain some hope that the tragedy might be a catalyst for change. President obama said the nation had not done enough to protect the children in from attacks and he will put effort to limit gun access as he declared that there was no excuse for inaction. This piece of information help me understand that more gun control wouldn't change the fact that the actions that was takin towards lanza attack.

The third source of information that was provided was csmonitor.com a bridge for action after sandy hook shooting. What caught my eyes was when it said the sandy hook killings had two elements which was a shooter in need of mental treatment and the use of powerful and legal guns. This is true because lanza could of had mental problems and there was no help there to treat him also the other situation is how someone can have so much guns and no one notice.what also came to my attention is the article said what do they do when someone with an illness carries a gun, fbi agent and republican congressman suggested to let school officials carry guns as well. Also make it hard for people with illness to carry guns.this does not help the fact of what actions are taken while tragedies like this occur. this helped me answer if limiting guns really help situation and this does not.

the fourth source of information is new york times “the children of tragedy returned to school life” provided me detail on how children and adults  are taking things after the tragedy. Everything is just getting back to normal. One mother said it can't be the same but hopefully everything get better day by day. this helped me understand even though tragedy occurs people still find a way to deal with it and looking forward

The fifth source of information is wikipedia second amendment to the US constitution it says it's part of United states bill of rights and it protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. This law is suppose to help people in danger but it just creates violence. If the law can some how limit the guns one person can bear. I don't understand why assault rifles are given to people with no gun licence , even for the people with gun licence there should be for a proper cause. This source of information helped me understand why people should bear arms but also on the other hand how dangerous it could be for normal citizen.

what I learned from the research is this two main problems about bearing arms and the danger of bearing arms also an example how dangerous someone can get violence holding guns. Sandy hook could've been a wake up call but there really no excuse for why responders couldn't reach the elementary school quick enough. This whole situation makes me think could have this been a setup for strict gun control or was this just an outburst.
