posted message: Happy almost Week-6 everybody. Wanted to let you know that the Week 6 Overview will go live tomorrow - but that there won't be too much new there. First priority - start pulling together your writing assignment. Second priority - you've just been in this course for six weeks. So what? (Be prepared to reflect on what you've done and what difference it makes for you. Did you learn anything? If so, what?)
Also - keep sharing your reading in the reading discussion - fascinating conversations there. Thanks!
posted message: Hey everyone
Given the collaborative nature of this group, I want to ask for your help with the Common Core-influenced lesson plan I am developing for my sixth graders. It's actually an adaptation of a project I have done in other years, but with a more focused shift towards informational text reading and writing (w/ a creative touch).
Here is a link to the document: http://goo.gl/WQXly
I would LOVE to get critical feedback as comments on the Google Doc. Point to what works, what doesn't and add suggestions, please. Don't worry about going easy on me. I can take it!
I'm working through this as a process and appreciate the help ...
Thanks in advance,
Kevin
posted message: We're going to have a webinar to brainstorm ideas for the future of the P2PU School of Ed on Tues. Nov. 15 at 6:00pm Eastern time here, and you are all invited! Hope you can make it. If not, please also feel free to email your input to schoolofed@p2pu.org. Thank you!
posted message: Thanks for your comment on Patrick's piece, Deb. I responded there--and I wanted to share this post by Angela Stockman, who points to the importance of story no matter what kind of writing we do (and she references the CC and David Coleman, too). Good stuff: http://www.angelastockman.com/blog/2011/08/11/story-still-matters/

posted message: I spent the afternoon with colleagues at my school, unpacking the guiding principles of our new Massachusetts Curriculum (adopted from the Common Core). It was a great activity in which we each were assigned a principle, and then identified key words and phrases to share out. I took our work and made a word cloud of what we noticed. If you are interested, you can see the word cloud and some more reflections of our work at my blog post: http://dogtrax.edublogs.org/2011/10/29/unpacking-guiding-principles-massachusetts-common-core/
posted message: Quick reminder of tonight's live session at 7:30pm Mountain. Tonight's guests are Karl Fisch, a math teacher blogging with his high school students, and Luke Neff, a teacher in Oregon who create beautifully illustrated writing prompts used by teachers around the country. See you there. Links to the live session are in the Syllabus.
posted message: Just a reminder that we'll be meeting tonight, for those of you who're able, with our guests Meredith Stewart and Zac Chase to talk about how they're making writing a habit in their classrooms. See you at 7:30pm Mountain - check the Syllabus for a link to the meeting room. If you can't make it, the recording will be posted later tonight.
posted message: Good Sunday everyone. Hope all is well with y'all. I hope that you've enjoyed, or at least found useful, reading through the standards and beginning to comment on them. I'm finding the comments and conversation quite useful. Feel free to continue to do so, but I thought I'd point you towards this week's activities - here's our Week 2 Overview -

posted message: This may be helpful: a livebinder of "crosswalks" by states showing transitions from state curriculum to new ones. But, I know my state (Massachusetts) has a newer document than the one referenced here. Still, it could be useful to see what's new, what's being adapted, and what's being left out.

posted message: Last night, I had posted a link about NCTE and Common Core, but now I see that this is only a proposed resolution and not an accurate view of NCTE, so I removed that post. Sorry about that. I guess it shows that the issue is still unfolding, and also, that I needed to do another round of checking before sharing. My apologies.
posted message: Good afternoon. Looking forward to our first Webinar tonight, 7:30pm Mountain time, here:

If you can't make it a recording will be available after the session on the course Syllabus. See you there. If you wish to speak during the Webinar, please make sure you've a microphone and some headphones to minimize feedback.
See you there.
posted message: Good evening, everyone, and welcome to Week 1 of our course. If you've not yet done so, take a look at this week's Overview and get started on the tasks for the week. I'll see any of you that're able on Tuesday night at 7:30pm Mountain for our first Webinar. And I'll see all of you in the comments threads and activities.
Good writing.
