Learn anything, with your peers.

At P2PU, people work together to learn a particular topic by completing tasks, assessing individual and group work, and providing constructive feedback.

This course will become read-only in the near future. Tell us at community.p2pu.org if that is a problem.

posted message: Hmmmmm... tried to post this week's reading, Minds On Fire under tasks... but somehow didn't quite manage to get it to go chronologically above May 5-11...
posted message: was wondering if anyone can recommend references related to independent/autodidacting learners and learning... all the stuff i'm coming across seems to be around structured and formal educational settings. i'd love to find work more along the lines of motivation, process, results, community formation, etc... any thoughts? thanks in advance!
posted message: hey all, sorry i haven't posted my comments for last week - at a conference so things are a bit hectic! am finished the paper though, and getting some really interesting new references here at the computer-human interaction conference in austin. will post them asap :)

posted message: hey guys, i created a task for the paper this week - check it out at the top of the task list! also, i was curious how people are feeling about the p2pu site/platform. it's clearly not perfect for our task, but since we're here, so to speak, would it be useful to have a page where we could keep a list of our feedback/reflections on the p2pu platform, and how it works (or doesn't) for a reading group?
posted message: Remember that people interested can meet online at 5PM EST today at http://pad.p2pu.org/p/peer-learning. Totally voluntary, I'll be there, and if nobody shows up, that's OK :)
posted message: So since nobody have suggested a reading for this week, I suggest Bielaczyc, K., Collins, A., O’Donnell, A., Hmelo-Silver, C., & Erkens, G. (2006). Fostering knowledge-creating communities. Collaborative learning, reasoning, and technology, 37–60. Lawrence Erlbaum. I have put an OCRed PDF on Crocodoc: http://crocodoc.com/5DnKvoX (you can also download it from there).
posted message: your random friday aft reading! fascinating blog post, "Feral Information Literacy": "feral animals tend to be hunted and despised... and yet by wit and appetite, spirit and invention, the feral creature survives in an environment that is neither of its own making nor entirely familiar to its habits of perception.... many people take on a feral state in their interactions with the internet, as it constantly shifts its boundaries, its cities and deserts. Likewise, the library is a place where we ought to allow for the feral.... Designing information literacy instruction without understanding that feral place where many library users reside is about as effective as taming a wolf. We can do it, but what good does that do for the wolf?"
posted message: hey guys! what paper shall we read this week? someone throw out a proposal?! :)
posted message: Synchronous meetup this Saturday: Hi all, I want to organize a synchronous meetup for those interested (totally not obligatory) this Saturday at 5PM EST, let's meet in this pad: http://pad.p2pu.org/p/peer-learning. Everyone who have already read the paper are super welcome. Depending on how many show up, I am thinking about doing something like this: http://pad.p2pu.org/p/peer-learning - divide everyone in pairs and do short Skype calls to discuss the paper, then a discussion in Etherpad, but we could also use other tools - mindmaps, collab Prezi etc. Should be fun! (If the time doesn't fit you, why don't you organize another meetup time? :))
posted message: hey guys, has anyone else signed up for the demo of http://altmetric.com/? (note: not altmetricS.com, which is different). it took a few days for me to get an invite but it looks like a SUPER promising tool for finding papers with social media coverage. i just set up and saved two queries - one for "peer learning" and one for "open education". here's an interesting paper that came up, maybe we can read it in a future week. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1365-2729.2011.00423.x/abstract;jsessionid=C1FC01D3F4C51D7C699ECE0B4DC85D6E.d01t04 (the full pdf is in my dropbox if you want access: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5121943/peerlearning/Yang_Assessing-effects-interactive-blogging-peer-interaction-motivation-etc_JCAL-2011.pdf)

posted message: hey guys, just created a discussion page for the paper here: https://p2pu.org/en/groups/the-researchers-abode/content/completely-online-group-formation-paper-discussion/. please feel free to start posting comments! we'll move on to the next paper on friday :)
posted message: awesome to have so many people joining the group! rebecca has started adding some comments to this week's reading over at crocdoc... and for what it's worth, if you find reading on the computer annoying/slow/etc. don't feel obliged to use the version i posted - just use whatever reading process works for you :) (print/analog, ipad, whatever...). i am finding the paper appropriately meta-- it's talking about formation of identity and workflows in online groups... while we get started doing precisely that in *this* group :).
posted message: I am trying to think about how I could help organize this and have been thinking one approach could be to aim have a series of conversations leading to actually publishing a series of white papers, pamphlets, books, etc. together. For example: we could: 1) Kick off a research topic with an open community call to present the topic / thesis, share big questions, discuss the scope of the topic, etc. 2) Organize from there a moderated discussion by email. 3) The research team for each topic then curates the discussion thread into a paper / book / blog post / whatever form. For example: I was recently introduced to Booki (http://www.booki.cc/), a collaborative book editing and publishing tool, and there are going to be others like it as well.
posted message: I can't "join" the group (sign-up is closed). Added myself as a participant.
