Challenge Three: Choose a Text Editor

For Challenge Three, I selected a text editor that has long been a staple in my Web development toolkit: Komodo Edit. To be fair to other great text editors, such as Sublime Text and TextMate, Komodo Edit isn’t earth-shatteringly different. However, it is free. And, free is quite the compelling feature to a budding Web developer. Like most competing products, Komodo Edit has code highlighting, folding, and completion – all critical features in a text editor. And, it’s both simple and intuitive to use. Of particular importance to me, it’s also a very clean and minimal product that stays out of my way.

So, there you have it. My object of text-editing affection. Now, I encourage you to develop a love affair with your own text editor of choice.

  Josh has clearly told us what his preference is for a text/web editor.

  Now, I'm also compelled to remark on Josh's use of the word "free" as he describes Komodo Edit. There are two kinds of free, and the gratis kind is nice, but the libre kind is more useful. A quick peek at the Komodo site to which Josh gives a link gives us the news that the full featured editor starts at at $295. That doesn't fit the gratis expectation.

  My recommendation for those who are beginning their Web journey is to locate a good editor that is both free/gratis and also libre/open. Software freedom is at the core of the World Wide Web. Let's promote it.
