Success!  Not only is this my fist badges app, but it's my first app created with the Play Framework and my first app deployed to the cloud using Heroku.  Lots of learning occured.

Here is the link to display my groups and badges.

The URI to my Play source code is git@heroku.com:sheltered-plains-3057.git

...and my Google Doc that shows some of my thought process while building this app.

Do I qualify for the badge of honor?

Hey Amy.  I've just been tasked with this as part of my annual performance goal.  I would appreciate any feedback on how to do this.  I'm thinking of creating a series of challenges such as:

        - Find out how to search our PowerSearch from the library page of your local library.  Create a bookmark to allow you to get back to PowerSearch.

        - Find an interesting article from National Geographic

        - Find a peer-reviewed or academic article that relates to a current event.  Start with a news feed or blog.  Discuss if you think the perspective of the news feed or blog is reasonable or accurate, or if we should doubt the author of the story.

What do you think?  Are there better scenarios?

Leah -- I'll move this discussion off this thread at the earliest opportunity.  I apologize for taking this tangent.

Hmmm... It would require some more thought.  Off the top of my head,  a database Learner badge for students who view all the training videos in a specific database and a Searcher badge for doing things like a boolean search, using limits, etc.

I have already created a set of badges, which you can see at http://www.slategroup.org/badges. These badges are available to members of SLATE, which is a Blackboard user group. We are working on a second set of badges for the group to use for members of our fall conference. I haven't figured out how to get them to connect to the Mozilla Open Badge Backpack yet (the badge baker always says my json file is a text file), but I'm still working on it!!!

    on Aug. 7, 2012, 4:48 p.m.

    ToddF said:

Hey Stephielayne -- I used badg.us to cook the badge I created.  I just had to fill out a web form, rather than putting the JSON together manually ( http://badg.us/en-US/)

I'm hoping that in the near future there will be so many people issuing badges, that we will have to find a way to verify the authority of the badge issuer.  That would be a nice problem to have!

The project I am doing is developing a badge issueing platform for my private school. I am then adding students and badges for classes that we have completed in the last 6 months.  So far I have set up the profile for the school at www.forallbadges.com.  I have added one badge and one student so far.  I will add the other 4 students who earned the badge I developed as I get their parents permission.  I will also be adding more badges as I have time.  Since school begins for us on July 30, i hope to have all this done and the start of this next years badges ready by that point.    The badge I have developed is for our underwater robotics team.

To be honest, I don't have the time to mess with this anymore.  I have designed the badge - twice -, posted it both times to the group.  The second badge can be viewed by anyone at the link I provided earlier.  (http://badg.us/en-US/badges/badge/underwater-robotics-scout-level )   If that badge doesn't suffice, just let me know and when this semester ends I will take another look at things,

Currently I an the director of a small private school in its first year, I am teaching core classes full time, I am also teaching an additional 4 classes afternoons/evenings and I have 7 children of my own.  I've spent enough time for the present on trying this badges thing out.  It may work for our school but I don't have the energy/time to get it up and running at this time.

Some interesting final projects which are from some global leaders in open badges. What to do ummm??

Decided to do a reflective post that looks at the potential connection between badges and personalised learning for adults with limited literacy/numeracy/language skills.(LLN).  Let's see how I go.....

    Back again

Decided to go with some 'blue skying' and think about how badges could be used in Adult Literacy/Numeracy teaching.  Experimented with using okmindmap to brainstorm ideas and help to synthesise thinking.

Here's the link so please stop by and add your doodles/ideas/questions... or just have a play and see what you can do with okmindmap. It has open access and all visitors have editting permissions.

    http://okmindmap.com/map/MDk4MjFmMzQtMmY5ZS00YTU2LThiMjAtNDk1YjAxNDI4ZjE1

Have tried to give a bit of a taste of the context in NSW Australia for those wanting to improve their literacy skills. Literacy training is part of the vocational education sector.

Soo..... Here's some starter thoughts on using badges for adult learners.

Badges , adult lln learners and personalised learning

The task I wanted to complete as my Final Project is to be able to issue a badge from the course I am developing in wikiversity. I'd like to issue a badge for every module and then once a learner has finished the course they get a meta-badge.

I created the badge taxonomy here; http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/MWA/Badges

And each chapter will have a reasonable amount of project work, defined in a chapter criteria, to be issued a chapter badge. The chapter 1 criteria is here; http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/MWA/Ch01/criteria

Once a learner has finished the quizzes and projects to be issued a badge the post thier evidence on the chapters evidence page; http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/MWA/Ch01/evidence This should trigger the instructors evaluation and the subsequent awarding of a badge.

I wrote a blog post describing all this; http://criticaltechnology.blogspot.ca/2012/06/open-badges-for-wikiversity-course.html

Peter- this is amazing! I read through everything and you gave me some really great ideas. I've recently been tapped to come up with a proposal for laying out badges for an entire Ed Tech program. My plan is to start out small in the LMS- basic internal badges. But in the future, Iw ould love to tap some help for exporting the earned badges to the backpack. :)

This is a GREAT compilation of resources, Christopher! It is super applicable to me right now. I appreciate your efforts.

thanks Leah- I know it is just a quick and cursory presentation, but wanted to put down something, and I can possibly return to it one day and expound upon open licensing, fair use, and how Open Content with an Open Badge assessment can change education accessibility.

    My personal challenge:

    1. Choose a final project you would like to create. Here are some ideas: documentation, ecourse, YouTube video, or a reflection blog post.

I'll be running a number of PD courses this summer and want to get my own teachers thinking about ways to recognize student achievement both in and out of the classroom. I'll use the OpenBadge concept as one means to achieve this.

    2. Promote your final project to your network and celebrate this learning success.

Check! Now you've got me thinking about expanding this to a preso for our NH Christa McAuliffe Technology Conference

    3. Include a link to your project in the discussion area below.
