Reading Response - Construct and Express

Create and collaborate with others using a variety of ways.

Read for at least 2 more hours. Your goal is to finish your book or article(s) before the 4 Tasks of this Challenge are completed.

You can do this in one sitting or you can do it 4 times for thirty minutes each time or 6 times for twenty minutes each. But it has to be focused, uninterrupted reading. No multi-tasking during your reading time.

After you've read your book or your article for at least 2 more hours, open the same Google Document that you started for the previous Task and plan to write for about more 30 minutes on this same document.

Begin by freewriting about your text again. Write non-stop for 5 or ten minutes about anything that comes into your head at this point about your book or article.

Then turn to the Literature Response Guides or to this guide, "General Response to a Non-Fiction Article. Quote from your book and from a Discussion on Youth Voices to compare and contrast a topic discussed in both places.

Once again, revise and proofread your Doc with a teacher and a couple of peers. Work to integrate our earlier writing with this newest writing. When you have finished your revisions and corrections, post your response to your text on Youth Voices as a Discussion.

In the Post Comment button here (on P2PU) add a link to your Discussion on Youth Voices. Do this before you click Yes, I'm done .

We encourage students to break out of the overly structured guides and create your own kinds of response. However, we do ask you to keep in mind the following guidelines:

  1. Begin by doing a freewrite: your first thoughts about this section of the book or article. You'll need to revise this writing before you publish it on Youth Voices.
    .
  2. Be specific about your response to your reading, and give an example from the text. Quote from the text.

  3. Quote a second section from the text when you make connections, ask questions, track elements of the text, or compare it to other things.

  4. End by predicting what you think might happen next, and say how you feel about continuing your reading

Alternative Assignment

Find your own book or read the first chapter of Black Boy and do this mini-project.

Image for issue at Youth Voices

We want you to build a Google Presentation around a Presentation template that we’ve put up in Google Templates called Reading Black Boy - Chapter 1. Each of the ten slides contains an image representing 2 to 6 pages in the first chapter of Black Boy. Your job is to record yourself and/or your peers on video, get it uploaded to YouTube, then insert at least one video on each page of your presentation.

Piri is now in jail after killing a cop during a robbery that wasn't to set him straight for a long time. Piri is shot also, but when he wasn't aware he shot a cop till after he was arrested. the cop lived. Piri is sentenced to 5-15 years in prison. In prison his courage is tested by other inmates. he came close to fighting a couple of times but before he could actually fight he was transferred to another prison. after having his paroled denied piri spends another couple years in jail. after a visit from his family he then finds out the love of his life trina is now married. it angers him but he also mentions he told her not to wait for him. after 15 years Piri was released from prison but he was arrested the same day for warrants from robberies he committed prior to shooting a cop. ten after a while is officially released and given 3 years of probation. He runs into trina But they don't have much to say to each other then he runs into another friend who is now a junky.

The final ten chapters of “Down these mean streets” by Piri Thomas might leave a reader feeling hopeful because even though he has made mistakes in the past Piri has time to think about it in jail and he is maturing. An example of this is on page 298. “Learning had made me painfully aware of life and me. I began to dig what was inside of me. What had i been? How had i become that way? What could i be? How could i make it?” This is important because throughout the whole book Piri is on a quest to find his identity. Early in the book with his struggles with his color and ethnicity and the ending where he is in prison, he studied and practiced the teaching of muslim faith.

So far, the characters in “Down these mean streets” might remind a reader of the characters in “The corner” . In “The corner” the character ,DeAndre McCullough , just Like Piri always feels the need to be accepted which gets him in trouble.  he was the son of two addicts and was going up in Baltimore, Maryland. He was in a gang and the gang sold drugs to keep money in their pocket. After a while he began to use the drugs he sold and it lead to him going to Prison.

After this part of the book, most readers probably will be looking forward to reading another book by Piri Thomas because of his ability to tell a great story. Even tho this is a autobiography he makes the story interesting by ability to tell a story and delivery.

As I continue reading “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Diaz, my emotions go in a roller coaster ride. I’m disappointed in Oscar for losing his swag with the ladies, but I’m happy because he now found a new love. Reading and writing, oh yes people a ladies man just transformed into the biggest nerd. Who would have thought? I personally never seen a transformation like this in person but hey is possible. After Maritza dumped Oscar back when he was 7, it really hurted him. He cried, he gained a whole lot of weight, he lost his pride, his cool, he lost everything! Oscar is in high school now and boy is he fat. Girls don’t even want to be around him and when they are they just laugh at him. All Oscar does now is read books especially comic books he loves them. If there is something out that has to do with the world ending or an apocalypse he will get it. Even if it’s a movie he will watch it, he seen them all. Oscar was spending so much time reading books and watching movies his mom was getting angry. She would kick him out the house just so he can actually go outside for once and live life instead of wasting every minute reading a new comic book or watching a new alien movie. This really bothered his mom and boy do I understand how she feels, I feel the same way and I’m just the reader.

Pages 20-22 of The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz might leave a reader feeling sad for Oscar. Oscar is really a full-time nerd and a proud one too. An example of this is on page 21: (Oscar) “Could write in Elvish, could speak Chakobsa, could differentiate between a Slan, a Dorsai, and a Lensman in acute detail, knew more about the Marvel Universe than Stan Lee, and a was role-playing fanatic.”. This is just so disappointing, does he really expect to be a ladies man again by wasting time on the Marvel Universe? I mean Oscar what the heck is wrong with you, you were once such a cool character. I guess I have to settle for Oscar the nerd now and move on from the old Oscar. Maybe being a nerd isn’t so bad after all, honestly speaking Oscar is having a lot of fun. Plus the fact he never has to worry about getting his heart broke again.

Something interesting happens on page 29 where it says: “Right there he had an epiphany that echoed through his fat self. He realized his fucked-up comic-book-reading, role-playing-game-loving, no-sports-playing friends were embarrassed by him”. This is an important point in the plot because it got Oscar really angry. It got him so angry it motivated him to become something. I mean noticing your friends are embarrassed to take you out will really hurt you and make you take action. Oscar started writing, I mean like he started writing a lot. His mom had sent him and his sister to Dominican Republic for vacation and so they can spent time with their Grandmother. He wrote two books during that period, and boy was he proud. Oscar was happy of his writing skills, he found a new happiness and got his pride back thanks to it.

After this part of the book, most readers probably will be looking forward to reading the rest of the book because they will be interested in the outcome of Oscar’s writings. Will it get him somewhere? Will one of his books be published and loved by the public? Or is this just another waste of time? Only way to find out is to keep reading. What’s probably going to happen next is Oscar might just write a book that will take him on a journey and maybe on that journey he will find a girl, well at-least I hope so.

What happened to my american free dream by Natalie Neptune

In this chapter a girl was telling her story about when she was born and how she moved to america a while back. Her parents gave her their citizen papers one day but her name wasn't on it and she told them that she also wanted to be an US citizen . She waited and waited until she was approved but when she finally did get em she didn't even want to be an Us citizen anymore because she felt like in America they were doing the same things cops did back in Haiti ,where you from from. She then explained that in Haiti police will break in your home unannounced the females and kill the males.

The reason she didn't want to be a Us citizen anymore was because she heard about a guy named Abner Louima that was also from Haiti and he was beat and raped with a toilet plunger in 70th percent on 1997. She thought that she was getting away from these kind of things but yet she walked right into it like she never left Haiti in the first place.

Chapters five and six pages 27 to 32 of “My Bloody Life: The of a Latin King” By Reymundo Sanchez. Might leave the reader feeling at ease because it seems like the author has changed the whole dynamic of the characters attitude, at first the character feels as if he has cannot defend himself and he feels like he has no one by his side but this suddenly changes. An example of why is on page 27 “As I lay there in pain saying to myself, “Man, what’s with this? What have i done to him?” A sudden rage came over me. I didn’t feel the pain anymore. I walked over to the table, grabbed the plate of food, and hit Pedro in the face with it.” This is shocking to me as the reader, because at first i thought that Reymundo did not have the guts to stand up for himself and defend himself but he changed my attitude towards him because he defends his self in this chapter.

Something interesting happens on page 27 where it says “Even though i kept to myself, Pedro still found reasons to start fights with me. But since i had hit him back he wouldn’t just start beating me. He would threaten me with his gun instead.” This is an important point in the plot because I think this is an interesting part of the book because throughout the whole book Reymundo is scared for his life and was unable to defend himself but now that he has Pedro took it from beatings to threatening Reymundo’s life with a gun, it was predictable to me that sooner or later Reymundo would grow the confidence to defend himself.

After this part of the book, most readers probably will be looking forward to reading the rest of this book because i think this book is really interesting and keeps the reader interested and in suspense about what's going to happen next in the book. What’s going to happen next is Reymundo will seek attention from The Spanish Lords. Which is a group of kids that hang out and party together, sell drugs etc, and i feel like he will get into a lot of trouble just to fit in with his new friends.

Chapter’s seven and nine pages 43 to 55 of “My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King” By Reymundo Sanchez might leave a reader feeling puzzled because at first the character’s intentions with hanging around gang member’s seemed as if he just wanted to be around people he knew would give him attention and talk to him and not be mean or act like he’s non existent the way his family treated him, but when Reymundo got bad news again about moving back to Puerto Rico with his family his intentions suddenly change we began to see a side of him that in previous chapters i did not see and that is if he’s going to join the Spanish Lords the Latin Kings or stay neutral amongst the gangs. An example of why is on page “As we walked, the guys explained that Rican’s very friendly treatment was his way of recruiting me for the Lords. It didn’t matter to me as long as i was getting free weed. Besides, I intended to join the Lords.” He’s saying this now but in chapter eight this changes Rican continues trying to recruit Reymundo as a member of the Spanish Lords but Reymundo’s attitude towards him is that he really doesn't need to pay him any mind he just wanted to hang with them and smoke weed but Rican insist that Reymundo join them.

One of the big ideas or themes in this book is that Reymundo is going to become apart of one of Chicago's biggest gangs the Latin Kings. You can see this on page 87 through 89 where it says “Hercules came up with the idea of going for a drive to find some Vicelords. The girls quickly agreed and so did I. As we were pulling out, someone asked Hercules where we were going.Hercules shouted back, “To find out what the newcomer is all about.” I sat there laughing like a fools, not realizing that the newcomer was referring to was me.” As you can see Sanchez wants us to think about Reymundo becoming apart of one of the biggest gangs in Chicago “The Latin Kings.”

After this part of the book, most readers probably will be looking forward to reading the rest of this book because in this part of the book the character proves himself by going through with shooting the Vicelords and the reader will be wondering weather Reymundo will or will not join the Latin Kings. What's probably going to happen next in my opinion is that he will join the Latin Kings and get into trouble with the Spanish Lords his former friends.
