Engaging with the Program

You may find it difficult to engage in the program because people will not be telling what to do every minute you are at your site. It is up to you to find out what your role at your site is. Do not be afraid to just jump in and participate in activities with the kids. You cold join a game of basketball, teach a student how to kick a football, sit next to a student at meal time, help a student with a math worksheet, or read a book to a few of the kids! You should never be standing around doing nothing. If you are having trouble finding something to do, ask one of your peers or the workers at your site. There is always something to be done! Here is a list of quiet games that you can play with the students during downtime, should they finish their homework early. Do not be afraid to put your own ideas into action. It never hurts to try new things!

Journal Response #5

Please pick one situation from each of the two categories below and, in two separate posts, describe what you would do in each situation.

Homework Time

1) A boy is at the pencil sharpener for the third time within the first 10 minutes of homework time.

2) The girl that you were working with during homework time has completed all of her work and has nothing left to do. There are still 15 minutes left in homework time.

Free Time

1) A student is sitting alone at dinner, smiling, he seems to be waiting for his friends.

2) At recess there is a little girl sitting alone against the wall.

3) Two boys are playing Connect Four at free time.

4) A group of students is playing Lightning (the basketball game) before it is time to go home.

Do not put your journal responses in the comments section below. Please use the Google document that we shared with you on Google Drive to respond.
