This course will become read-only in the near future. Tell us at community.p2pu.org if that is a problem.
Check out two places where 3D creations are publically shared:
a. thingiverse - a universe of 3D models at your disposal
http://www.thingiverse.com/
b. tinkercad - amazing web-based super easy and intuitive 3D modeling tool, and the 3D weapon of choice for this introductory challenge
http://www.tinkercad.com
Familiarize yourself with the two websites and get a basic understanding of what they do.
Browse top rated, staff favorite, or new/ hot things and select one item that you like from each site to hyperlink in your comment for this task

others are also good
its real fun and amazing
I really like http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:27093
Partly because I like the idea of 3D printing mechanical objects. Also because I want to mae my own set of simple gears. I've looked for sets to buy online to be used in math classes (gear teeth and spin ratios have nice linear relationships)
I was really surpried (then not, because hey, it's the internet) as to the variety of things posted in thingverse. Some very useful,, some just artistics; great site.
#1 fav is this planetary gear set http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:23030 There's something steam punk about this, printing an old gearing technology with latest digital & 3D printing technology.
Also my fav is the Tantillus 3D printer http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:23484/ I've seen it's output, very impressed with its quality.
Tinkercad seems to be more amateurs / less nerdy, overall its models r too simple, but I found this awesome bike that was actually printed https://tinkercad.com/things/4DgmCtr4Ne2-hollowbike
This is one of the first things I printed.
