Reading: Popular Education [Dec. 16, 2012, 11:38 p.m.]
Some organizations try to provide vital information to communities in both English and Spanish. Let's see what we can make of these resources.
First, let's check out the Families for Freedom manual Deportation 101: A Community Resource on Anti-Deportation Education and Organizing. It's pretty long, so let's start with just looking at the first page of the deportation basics section, page 5 of the manual. Try reading it in Spanish first. Then read the English version and look back at the Spanish. Can you figure out more of what's written now?
Now, let's try the same thing with an ACLU resource on your rights when encountering law enforcement. Look at the Spanish version first, then the English, then back at the Spanish. It's also a bit long, so let's focus on the first page in the section on Questioning, the fourth page in the pamphlet.
Comment when you've finished with any questions you have. Look at the other comments and answer any questions you can.
