As I mentioend, we just have three girls on the team, and that has had challenges all of it's own - first time participants, 14 years old, no programming background, no computers at home, no mobile devices, just me - a first time mentor taking them on, and I could go on and on about our challenges...but the one thing these three girls have is dedication and committment...and every time they get together they have so much fun. Would we love to win? yes. Would we love to develop the best app? yes.
Everything finally "clicked" for them about 5 weeks ago. Now they are hungry, they are interested, but we are also realistic about our strengths on the team, the challenges we have had to overcome, and that we just have to do our best. We've navigated a path throught the challenges (constantly pivoting) to get to where we are now - still working like crazy. BUT the girls have had a blast. All want to come back next year. The window of opportunity has been opened to them...and they like what they see.
I asked the girls what they thought about a team of 6 and they just thought it was great that so many people want to get involved, but they didn't see it as a negative towards the work effort they put in at all. As groups get bigger you get into more logistical issues - a bigger team doesn't mean that things get done faster and communication has to be even better.

I hear you on the 'all of a sudden it clicked'.
Our biggest challenge has been keeping the girl's attention and participation, this is why six hasn't been a logistic issue. They're not fighting for leadership, but on the other hand they have been excellent at cooperation when having to choose between one person's ideas or another. Their attention drifts in and out at random times, some are better at focus than others but really also haven't had one or two girls rush in to fill the void and take over. That's good because it means no one has felt left out (I think!), but it's been a bit of a nail biter about whether we'd be able to finish. Now that they've been through the entire process and they have gotten feedback from professionals they have a good idea (shooting the video really sealed the idea this is a competition and they're 'onstage'), they're psyched.
Probably because we can only get them together once a week and four hours is a long time for a Saturday. Food is a huge necessity, and a great motivator! Their mood and energy definitely perk up when the food comes out.
Our collecting teaching/mentoring attitude has been: "This is about learning. If we get everything done and compete, that's icing on the cake."
Oh yes...food...Starbucks should be a sponsor of the App challenge:) I've been doing a circle: Los Gatos - SF (where job is) - Oakland twice a week, but I wouldn't change it for the world. It has actually given me more meaning and I may actually be getting more out of this that the girls...or at least learning as much. One of the Splunk founders happened to come in yesterday and he told them it was all about fun and ideas and to have a blast....totally broke the mould on what they thought a "founder" should be like...adn the craziness went on from there. Super work on keeping them all focused. I've started setting a clock...

Hi Nada,
That's a great question! To make sure the judging is unbiased, we are assigning judges to be outside of the team's region. So unfortunately, the judges will most likely not be able to understand Arabic. The girls can write a script for their presentation, and you can help them edit it for grammar, and then they can practice as much as they want before videotaping the pitch!

Hello!
The app developed by Solidarias team, from Brazil, won't allow judges to register a new account. Instead, the girls created a username to be used by all of them. Is this ok? If yes, how can we let them know about the username and password created? Is it possible to let comments in the section of the code on the judging platform?
The other question is about one of the items of the rubric:
Does the team convey their understanding of the computer programming?
Where do you expect to see this once there is nothing about programming in both BP and pitch, except by the code itself.

I will let Tahani answer about the judging accounts. You may reach out to her directly and if it is a common problem for teams then we can post more about it here. We are including a comments portion in the judging rubric to get feedback from the judges. They are completing the rubric as a Word doc.
I would address the programming knowledge in the pitch and business plan by being deliberate about 1-2 items you coded for the app and using the terminology we used in our PowerPoints and handouts for the tutorials and explaining it in simple terms. Sample terminology: event, event handler, procedure, accelerometer, list, label, timer, sound, database, image sprite, etc.

We had 4 girls on our LPS Oakland team, GiTV, and one dropped out, so we're down to three. They are very eager to continue the challenge. I was hoping tha tthis would not be a problem. The other team from the scholl dropped out so we can't merge teams. The team is worried about the deliverables, as there's no way we can get the app coded in the timeframe we have, but I was hoping that if we have all the screens deigned and try and code one or two workflows would that be acceptable? that give us time to complete the rest of the deliverables. Absolutely! Please have the three invested girls submit everything that they have developed by April 13. If you only get screens done, show shots of the screens in the video, if you get 1-2 workflows, try capturing those in the video as well. As you may notice in the judging rubric, "app functionality" is only one of many components that go into a team's score. Many teams are in similar situations. Go for it! We have had teams of three submit before.

Two questions:
We have kind of the opposite issue of Ruth. On the Technovation site is says teams are suggested to be between 4-5. We narrowed down to six pretty quickly with one trending to drop out -- but she never did which is a great thing but here we are. I realize that Technovation prefers a max of five but am asking that we be allowed to enter with six participants instead of making one an alternate, especially because its such a big deal this one girl hung in tehre. Would you all consider this?
Also wondering where you'll be providing the info on how to post the final deliverables? In this forum?

Shannon, once again, we are thrilled that you have been able to work with a group of six girls consistently through the 12-week curriculum. Although some teams may consider having six girls an advantage, it can also be a disadvantage since it can be challenging to coordinate and agree with an additional person's schedule and opinions. That said, we are proud of each girl's commitment to the program and we encourage you to submit with your dedicated team of six. Please be sure to divide up the 4-minute video pitch for six girls as well. For future seasons, we recommend the model of having a team of 4-5 with an extra girl as an alternate. If no one drops out and she is a strong contributor, then you may ask her to participate in the pitch.

Thanks all, I very much appreciate this flexibility. I can promise you six is not providing a competitive advantage for PDX, this has really been an exercise in finding their team spirit and ambition -- and they did. Some who were told by parents they had to do this and weren't thrilled are even saying now they want to do this again next year. That's been awesome to watch.
It's interesting too because our team is a very young one, the ages are mostly 13 with one 15 year old who just turned 16. Now a team of three to four 17-18 year olds with that additional level of focus would probably be a serious competitive advantage but hey, we'll take the challenge! :)

App functionality is part of the rubric that makes up the total score. Do your best and consider that it is not the only part of the project that is contributing to a team's score. Do not assume that judges will download your source code, so please make sure that you demonstrate functionality to get the maximum score for functionality (either by showing screens of the app or workflow on a device such as a phone or tablet).

The format is completely up to you. My advice is to look through the judging rubric and think about how best to address each point in the 4-minute video for your app. I would say to lead with your strongest component, so if that's the user-friendliness of the app, make sure to make it prominent and feature it. If it's the problem you're solving, find the best way to tell the judges -- maybe through statistics (slides), a short skit, a personal story from someone on your team, etc.
You have creative license for the 4-minute video -- just remember the rubric and stick to those points (maybe even have external people judge it and re-do the video for parts that aren't scoring as high). Remember, the rubric does not judge anything about the video itself, it's about the team's ideas, market strategy, coding of the app, etc. If one component is not as strong, do not panic, just try to get the most points and as I said, lead with your strongest component.

Hi Nada!
So I worked with some awesome people at p2pu, and they figured out why your teams couldn't comment! The teams that couldn't comment did not verify their email address. This means once they sign up, they get a verification email. So they have to log into their email account, find an email from p2pu and click the link in the email to verify the account.
Since we know these accoutns belong to your teams, p2pu is going to go ahead and verify them from their end, so your teams don't have to do anything, and should be able to comment and write posts on the course soon. So have your teams check when they get a chance :)

I'm mentoring online the brazilian team from Universitas School, in Santos. I'm not technical, but the teacher is a programmer and owns a software development company and can provide strong support from this side. But he doesn't speak English and is not familiarized with App Inventor. They are almost done with paper prototyping and started to develop the front end but will need support to the code piece. They want to work on app inventor for 2 weeks from now and consult with a mentor who is an app inventor expert to ask questions and learn more. Do you think it is posible to arrange this 'consulting session' on early March?

Video Pitch 101 Workshop in NYC - Sun, Mar 10 - 10am-4pm

We recommend 4-5 girls per team, but if you have an extra girl she can serve as an "alternate" in case one of your students drops out.
I would also like to request that all videos as part of this course on the P2PU website be linked to YouTube Education (EDU). Our school district blocks both YouTube and Vimeo. At this time, we are unable to play any of the course videos from school.
Hi Mentors: We are working away at YB as I type. The girls asked if they will have a mentor this year. They also asked if it was absolutely necessary to have a mentor. We have two groups, each led by a veteran from last year, so their questions make sense to me. We meet Mondays from 6-8. These are a great group of girls to work with!

Iridescent uses tshirtpros.com to order our shirts (they have our t-shirt designs on file) but they are in California so shipping can get pricey. Chinma in Hartford, CT just shared with me that she got a great quote from tshirts etc (website - www.tseink.com).
Below is the back of the shirt customized for NYC teams with a logo from the Hive Digital Media Fund in the New York Community Trust. They covered the cost of 200 shirts for NYC teams.
This is my final calendar of meeting logistics. Our meeting time is 4-6 with the girls preparing from 4-5 and working with a mentor or speaker 5-6. Then the girls commit 2 hours of work independently or after school together informally. I have set it up that the girls get to register for this as a one-semester elective course towards their GPA.
If any team would like to travel to Haverhill, MA to meet with us any week, we are happy to host any team. Just contact me to make it happen.

Happy to kick of a Setting-Up Logistics List! Feel free to edit, add or correct all. My initial thoughts...
1. The girls will need to commit to four hours a week together January through half of April: two hours learning time going through course materials with the mentors and two hour working on their apps and other deliverables with the teachers. Make sure this time commitment is clear in your recruiting of mentors, teachers and students. [according to the curriculum, somewhere I read the opposite -- teachers go through the material and mentors work during the work time. I'm sure someone will point out which is correct!].
2. You'll need a room that has enough computers systems for each girl with an Internet connection, web browser, audio capabilities, Java and MIT App Inventor installed. Local universities and colleges are anxious to recruit young women into STEM programs, ask one if you can use their computer lab if you don't have access otherwise. The girls can double up, make sure they trade places so each gets a hands on experience. The room will also need a projection system. Recommended that you do an installation and test at least one day in advance of Hack Day and test each system by starting a tutorial to insure proper installation of App Inventor and Java.
3. Have healthy snacks available if possible, especially if working with underserved families. It's a long class!
4. The girls will need a Google account to get into App Inventor. Have them create one in advance of Hack Day and bring along their User ID & Password if it's new and memory fails. If they don't have one with the first class they need access to their email accounts to create one. If their email account isn't web based, they will not be able to do this in class. Consider setting up a few dummy accounts in advance with a free service like Hotmail or Yahoo! for the girls who don't to expedite this in class.
5. Set up a Wiki on a free service to help your local team of mentors and teachers consolidate materials and communication.
6. Create two email distribution lists and send a note to all. One for teachers and mentors only, one for the girls and adults.
7. Make sure there is a system administrator or other capable trouble shooter available during class if you are using someone else's lab or computer system.
8. Having at least two teachers and mentors per class is ideal. One to lead and one to keep on eye on the girl's progress during the learning modules, and both are needed for work time.
Recommendations: bring healthy snacks or make sure the girls do. It's a long class.
9. Technovation asks but doesn't require the girls write an essay to join, it's up to the local lead. It's meant as a way to make sure the girls are motivated.
10. Mentors and teachers should meet as soon as the curriculum is released so everyone can determine which modules they're most interested in leading. Make sure each module has at least two people with two more for backup.
11. Leaders will need to become acquainted with the materials for each class they lead and ensure they have the appropriate print outs, links, downloads, images, sound files and other elements readily available in advance. It's good to have your own anecdotes or ideas how to explain a concept as well as be ready edit out extraneous information if time runs short.
Thanks for putting so much thought into this, Shannon! It's great to have a checklist from someone who is on-the-ground and actually running the program-- your perspective is invaluable. We tried to include a lot of this info in the starter kit, but I like the way you've laid it out here so we can definitely add a page to our starter kit and resources page which includes this information.
