Week 11: Pitch Coaching (4/14/2014)

Students will practice presenting their pitch and receive feedback to improve their presentation skills.

Technovation aims to create an environment in which high school girls feel empowered and confident. Promotion of self is a skill that many women have difficulty with, and this can have a negative impact on their careers. This lesson equips students with skills in self-promotion and boosts their confidence when presenting to a group. Each team will practice and film their 4-minute pitch.

yes i keep on receiving the following message:

    This webpage is not available

The server at beta.appinventor.mit.edu can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.

    Here are some suggestions:

    • Reload this webpage later.
    • Check your Internet connection. Restart any router, modem, or other network devices you may be using.
    • Check your DNS settings. Contact your network administrator if you're not sure what this means.
    • Try disabling network prediction by following these steps: Go to the Chrome menu > Settings > Show advanced settings... and deselect "Predict network actions to improve page load performance." If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend selecting this option again for improved performance.
    • Add Google Chrome as a permitted program in your firewall's or antivirus software's settings. If it is already a permitted program, try deleting it from the list of permitted programs and adding it again.
    • If you use a proxy server, check your proxy settings or contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working. If you don't believe you should be using a proxy server, adjust your proxy settings: Go toApplications > System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies and deselect any proxies that have been selected.
Error 105 (net::ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED): Unable to resolve the server's DNS address.

    Hello,

The instructions for the video pitch indicate that it is supposed to be four minutes long.  Are there any drawbacks to having a longer pitch (six to seven minutes long)?

    Thank you,

    Lara

I would expect that the judges will be told to watch only 4 minutes. When we did live pitches, the teams were stopped at 4 minutes and not allowed to continue. You should work hard to reduce your message so you can convey it in 4 minutes. Good luck! -Margaret

    Hi Lara

I would do your best to get it down to four minutes. The judges will only watch four minutes. A shorter video is fine, but longer can affect "clear and concise" on the rubric as well as anything else on the rubric that you do not cover in the four minutes.

    Thanks,

    Angélica

We are wondering how creative we can be with the video pitch. I know that each of the girls has to at least be in it and talk about the app, but do thay have to stand up and formally pitch it  as a formal presentation or can we take more of an advertising style to it and showcase it that way?

    Thanks, Ruth

    Hi Ruth

It is completely up to you and up to the team. As you can tell from the rubric, they do not judge the video itself. It is up to you to create a video that best gets across all of the criteria. Since it may be cumbersome for judges to download the apps, I recommend that each team demo and/or explain the app components (screen shots, slides, on a phone/tablet, etc.) to make sure you get the maximum score for the app. Try to make sure the video addresses everything on the rubric.

    Thanks,

    Angélica

    Hi,

My team is getting the following error on the Block Editor:

The Blocks Editor is having trouble communicating with the server (error=500) If this happens repeatedly, try exiting the Blocks Editor, refreshing the Designer web page, and then reopening the Blocks Editor.
    Exit the Blocks Editor now?

The Troubleshooting Guide at http://beta.appinventor.mit.edu/learn/troubleshooting.html may provide further help.

Anyone know how to fix this?

    Thanks,
