Choose a Domain Registrar

Search the web for the best place to register a domain name

Your first task is to spend up to ten minutes searching the web for someone that you can register a domain name with. Domain names are not bought, they are registered and you pay to register domain names for a set period of time - normally from one or two years.

The rules and regulations surrounding registration of domain names can change from country to country and are also dependant on the country to which the domain name belongs. The registrar you use doesn't have to be in your country, but it should be someone that you're comfortable giving your money to.

Be sure to ask your peers on the challenge discussion page for advice because they will likely have valuable information that you can use in your search for a domain registrar. You may even choose to use the same one. When you've found a registrar you're happy to do business with, this task is complete.

I prefer getting my domain at name.com. I love name.com for its free Google Apps setup, so I don't need to pay for G!Apps service.

I have been using Namecheap for many years now as they offer very affordable domain registries. There are at times where they also have domain specials for a limited time, and when you purchase a domain through their special sales, you keep paying the same discounted price when you renew them even if the specials are already expired. Their customer service is also topnotch as I haven't had any problems with them when I needed advice and help.

I recommend trying them. There are some web hosting companies that offer domain registries, but I prefer going for an outside/individual domain registry service in case you need to transfer web hosts and won't have to deal with various DNS transfer issues with your domains if they are also under your web host.

    Hi everyone.

I checked some of the recommended hosts (godaddy, dreamhost, wordpress) etc. and I don't really know what's going on with the laws you mention. Can you recommend me any good domain hosts in Europe? Germany or other countries? I would like though to speak in English with a helpdesk. Thank you!

I have used godaddy.com in the past, but more recently just used networksolutions.com for domain registration (http://newenglandah.com) and have not had any issues. networksolutions gives you two free email addresses for your domain, which is nice.

I've been using e-velocity (http://e-velocity.co.uk/) for my hosting for a while now. I know it's a good thing to shop around, and I'm sure I could get cheaper than their £15 a year package, but the service is good, so I'm going to stick with them as it's worth it to me for the peace of mind.

From experience I know that Blacknight.com are an excellent host. You can register your domain and choose from a variety of hosting packages. Their customer support is excellent and while they keep up technology they will go to some lengths to keep their customers happy.

That said, I'm on a budget of zero. So I went for free hosting with bytehost. No bells and whistles, but it supports php and allows you to register a free domain name too.

I have used hostgator, bluehost, dreamhost, godaddy, and mediatemple all in the past. I finally found and stick with www.whois.com for all of my dns and hosting needs now. They are very low cost and very flexible with internet technologies. The customer support is absolutely amazing and I just wouldn't go with anyone else after I've been with www.whois.com! Give them a try out, I don't think you'll be dissappointed in any way. They sure beat godaddy by far in every way possible.heart
