Jordan Wirfs-Brock

Jordan Wirfs-Brock

I work as data curator at The Piton Foundation, which means I spend part of my time managing data and part of my time telling stories with data and creating tools to help others do the same. I’m a recent graduate of the master’s program in journalism at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where I focused on environmental reporting and data-driven storytelling. I have a background in aerospace engineering (of all things), but it turns out my great loves aren't space exploration or airfoils – they are long-form narrative and data visualization.

Writing is my passion. Some of my favorite topics include: technology and society, the environment, agriculture, trash and waste, and public health. I love data almost as much as I love words and language, and am building my experience in data design, interactive mapping and geographic journalism.

As a journalism student, I worked with Adobe Creative Suite, Audacity, Soundslides and other media software. As an undergraduate, I learned to program in Ada and Java, but not very well. At Piton, I work with GIS software, generally ESRI software and some open source mapping tools. I Twitter (probably too much) and blog (probably too little).

I like digging in the dirt, baking ugly pies, brewing beer and running (especially if mountains are involved).
