I was a full time parent volunteer at an inner city all girls public school, called Harriet Tubman Leadership Academy for Young Women, in Portland, Oregon. It was established in Sept. 2007 and focussed on math, science and leadership - areas where women and women of color are underrepresented. In June 2012, the school was shut down because of budget cuts. With the help of a retired administrator and other parents and teachers, I started a Girls Lead club for girls to provide them an opportunity to pursue their interests in math, science and leadership. Technovation challenge seems to provide that opportunity. That is why I want to introduce it to teams of girls in Portland.
