Alan Haburchak

Alan Haburchak

I'm originally form Colorado, where I studied Chinese and history in undergrad. I moved to New York in 2008, where I fell in love with visual journalism, storytelling and coding. Currently I'm pursuing all three of those wholeheartedly, while teaching them to students as an Adjunct Professor at Columbia's J-School.

Code-wise, I am well versed in HTML (including HTML5 specs), CSS (with CSS3 elements), jquery and javascript. Also competent in writing PHP and using MySQL databases. Supplement the sometimes meager earning journalism provides with freelance web development projects for clients that have ranged from individual journalists to GE.

I also have extensive experience shooting and editing photos and video, most recently for TIME magazine's online video unit, as well as for non-profits like the Knight Case Studies Initiative and The Earth Institute at Columbia University.

Mostly, even before I had any real involvement with journalism, I've always been a web geek. From Prodigy and BBS services in the early 90s to my early pickup of Facebook and Twitter, I've been into using the web to communicate. Looking forward to the next phase, maybe even getting to be a part of creating it.
