Scheduled Hack Days

Organizing a Hack Day (App Inventor training)? Post your event here

In order to prepare teams for working with App Inventor, you can complete the five tutorials in this fall course before the 12-week course begins the week of January 21. You may have teams complete tutorials on their own or you may want to join with other teams in your area to work together on the tutorials at an in-person "Hack Day".

The Hack Day Guidelines give you step-by-step instructions and tips to help you plan the event. The Hack Day PowerPoint introduces the Technovation program, presents the first set of tutorials, and explains the computer science concepts behind each lesson to use at your event.

We had our NYC Hack Day with CoderDojoNYC at the Iridescent Studio on Sunday. We had a lot of fun! I was most impressed with how students quickly jumped into the hacks, playing around with buttons and creating original apps. Thank you to all of the teams and volunteers who spent their Sunday with us. Thank you also to the Hive Digital Learning Fund at the New York Community Trust for funding our event.

Hello there! At DSST Cole Middle School in Denver we had our first hack day this past weekend, January 19th from 9:30AM-4:30PM. Some of the girls couldn't make it on Saturday so we will have "make up" hack day in the coming week.

We ran into some technical difficulties with getting the software working on the students computers. There's a lot of security on their school laptops so this week I'm meeting with the school's IT guy to try to find a solution. After trouble shooting some of the difficulties the students worked pretty quickly. They finished Crystal Ball, Paint Pot, and started Mole Mash. I know once we work out the computer situation they will fly through the rest of the tutorials.

One issue we kept having was getting the Blocks Editor to recognize and connect to their phones. I think it is again a problem with their computers/the network because it worked for my personal laptop on the same wireless network. Did anyone else run into similar problems? Any advice?

The girls are so excited to be part of the technovation challenge! Excited to see what they do with it! One comment about running hack day: I think it's a bit long for most students. They were very tired by the end (and so was I). I think working out two hack days would work best. Especially for large groups like ours (we have 35 girls).

Some of the device would not be recognized and needed an oem driver instead of the generic USB. This website has many of the OEM drivers. http://developer.android.com/tools/extras/oem-usb.html#Drivers If you can see the device via device manager the software should work well. I also found that packaging the software for download many times I got an error that the server was busy. We worked on Sunday and didn't experience that problem. Laura Estabrooks

    LOS ANGELES HACK DAY

After several scheduling conflicts, we've decided to postpone the LA Hack Day to Sunday, Jan. 27th, from 10-5. Even though this is technically after the program begins, we don't feel that it will be a problem. If you and your stuents wish to have your own Hack Day in LA before that, you are welcome to do so.

Our Hack Day will be taught by a veteran Technovation teacher who has significant App Inventor experience and is excited to work with your students. Details on location will come soon!

The girls were showed around  office. Then they were getting acquainted in a friendly atmosphere with a piece of cake and started creating and exchanging ideas about their future application.

I am proud of my girls! They are energetic inspired and full of ideas!

    Just look at our pictures!

An update about the "scheduled" Hack Day in Los Angeles this Saturday?  I was originally told it would be January 12th at the HQ in downtown LA.  But no further information was available.  So then I told it was a "tentative" date only.  Seeing as how it is already January 8 and no information is forthcoming, I am assuming it won't be this Saturday, January 12th.

The question now is this:  Is the Technovation Challenge Team planning on holding a Hack Day in Los Angeles?  I did not organize one for my girls because I have been under the assumption that we would attend whatever else was organized.  So, do I need to plan something?
