This is a topic I struggle teaching to my students. They do not have a deep rooted understanding of fractions and so trying to teach them operations with fractions is difficult. By participating here, I hope to get extra resources or ideas to help my students better understand what a fraction is an how to perform operations with them. I do not think I would be interested in helping with the study group organization but that could chagne over time.
Public Set Answer:
I'm looking more for resrouces at this time and therefore don't know what kind of help I would be able to provide with designing the OER collection of interactives on fractions.

I teach Algebra and love it, but often get frustrated when students can't do basic arithmetic. Since my certification and training is in secondary math, I don't really know how to help them. So the search for increased knowledge begins...
How can we improve education?
Location:
Standard Set Answer:
My interest in fractions stems from a frustration in getting my students to use fractions to do foundational algebra tasks such as finding slope. Fractions were never difficult for me, but in fact were perfectly logical. It never occurred to me that someone would not understand how to get their own portion of the pie.
It is my hope that by participating in this forum, I will be able to understand how fractions are presented initially to students in elementary math. What methods work? What methods are traditionally used, but actually create problems for students? How do you address the different learning styles or more acurately the different kinds of cognitive reasoning? It is my goal to apply what is learned from this forum to remediate my students and subsequently enhance their understanding of algebra.
Because of my complete lack of knowledge on the level of elementary math, I think that I would not be a wise choice for the organization of this group.

I am a fifth grade teacher at Wells Central School in Wells, NY. With over 20 years of educational experience, I have remained a classroom teacher by choice. I have taught in the urban Rochester City School District and now work in a small deeply rural district.
I am passionate about the effective use of technology in education and Open Educational Resources. I have largely moved from textbook instruction to self-created multimedia. I continuously use reseach and data to improve student learning outcomes.
My education includes a BA in History with an East Asian concentration from the University of Rochester and an MSE in Elementary Education from Nazareth College.
Outside teaching and education, I run a small bakery. I also enjoy history and genealogy—combining the two to write rich family history narratives.
Location: Wells, NY in the Adirondack Mountains

I was invited to join because I'm working on a fractions unit in Moodle. I hope to get a collection of questions that I can use to draw students into the work and some ideas about how to create more of a gaming approach that will keep them motivated and interested. There is no www internet connection -- only intranet.
Public Set Answer:
I'm working on a Math7 Moodle course for a country where boys often drop out in their first year of secondary school. They don't have internet access so it must be entirely self-contained. It must also be engaging and something they look forward to using when they open their laptops every day.
What are 'hot button' questions I can start them with as they take on various topics?
How can I build interactivity into this kind of closed environment?
How can I keep them moving through the topic, but provide enough practice for mastery?

I started remixing an elementary open textbook into a Moodle course (very tentative and draft, but that's why we're here!) as a couple other P2PU courses, and now it's spun into this group.
-
What do you hope to achieve by participating?
Collaboration with folks smarter than me, and ultimately, some online interactive math materials that can be shared with others
-
Are you interested in helping with the study group organization?
Sure (post Dec. 1 -- I'm overcommitted until then!)
