   I volunteer with an education based social enterprise start up- Compass Partners- that has developed a Fellowship program for Freshman University students that would like to create and build their own social enterprise. Compass connects students to other students and builds networks while providing an alternative hands- on method to learning how to run a business. 

  I also work at an international organization that focuses on public diplomacy and cultural exchange. My division works on the International Visitor Leadership Program with the US Department of State. The program brings business professsionals from all over the world to the US for a three week business exchange program. While in the US, my organization sets up these visitors with their US counterparts to share best practices in their respective fields. I am most interested in the programs related to education and social entrepreneurship. 

  I hope that I can learn a little more about how the international community perceives changes in education and the models around the world that are really working.

  I'm a parent of two children in a large U.S. city, and I'm moving to a slightly-smaller U.S. city. However, while I find issus with curricula frustrating I'm not entirely here for that alone.

  We're in an always-on world where parents connect to one another and educators in new ways. I've found that while educators and the system seem to move toward technology, it seems woefully slow considering the speed at which progression is found in other fields.

  I want to see how things are done elsewhere, to help contribute if I can, and bring all these ideas with me into schools at a parent-teacher level.

  As learner in Dominican Republic and Washington, DC.

   

  2) What do you hope to contribute to this seminar?

  When I graduated from Law School, my term paper analyzed the social situation of disabled people around the world and in the Dominican Republic in particular, focusing and criticizing the evolution of the laws that affect disabled persons and particularly on the importance of their inclusion in the educational system. I followed up, together with others, by advocating before in the Dominican Congress the need to modify our General Law on Disabilities. But changing laws will not get us very far unless we empower the disabled with the adequate knowledge about how some exponential technologies could help them mitigate and even partially or totally overcome their handicaps. The school I attended I was taught to prioritize critical analyses over correct answers and to value the creativity and wisdom of human processes as well as the results of these processes; to enjoy the journey no matter how hard it was, because the journey is the lesson.

   

  Also, I always participate in a Book Fair in 2011 called “Used Book Fair” were we recived donated books which were sold at prices much accequibles and money was raised for the Foundation “Jornada Feliz”, another Fundation where I’m a volunteer for coordinating activities and teaching children of families with low income.

  I studied a BSci/BEng at university and went on to work for seven years as a telcommunications engineer and later consultant, and then went on to follow my REAL passion...education.  In 2003 I completed a PGCE in the UK and have been teaching ever since!  In July 2011 I successfully completed a Master of International Crisis Management, with a focus on Education in Emergencies, and am now on a volunteer assignment in the Philppines to empower parents to actively support their children's education.
