Intervals & Tonal Degree Names - Part 4: Augmented Intervals [Jan. 12, 2013, 11:48 p.m.]


 

The next interval we will be talking about is the augmented interval. To recap the augmented interval is an interval that you can base off of the major and perfect interval. Since with an augmented interval all you have to do is raise the major or perfect interval by a half step and it is then augmented. 

Since it can be with perfect and major intervals that means we will be talking about unisons, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths, and octaves. Yes augmented unisons and octaves, it gets weird but you don’t see these a lot!

 

First the augmented unison. So a unison is the same exact note. So from C-C the same exact C not lower or higher. So an augmented unison will be the same letter name but different accidental. It will be a half step higher.

 

Here are all augmented unisons:

·      A-A#

·      B-B#

·      B#-Bx

·      Bb-B

Next is the augmented 2nd. The augmented 2nd is the enharmonic equivalent to the minor third, it is a whole step and a half step away it is one half step higher than the major 2nd.

·      B#-Cx# <- (That is a triple sharp)

·      Bb-C#

So this is where it gets odd because not only do we see our first instance of a triple sharp but we see intervals going and coming from one type of accidental to a different kind. So with a triple sharp you put the double sharp sign which is an x and then add the normal sharp sign after it like this Ax#.

 

Next is the augmented 3rd. So an augmented 3rd will be the enharmonic equivalent to a perfect 4th. It is a half step up from the major 3rd and is 2 whole steps and a half step away.

Next is the augmented 4th also known as the tritone. So a “tritone” is also known as the devils note, a lot of metal music uses this note and it is the main note used in diminished chords and scales. The tritone is also a flattened 5th. It is 3 whole steps away and a half step above the perfect 4th.

Next is the augmented 5th. The augmented 5th is a half step above the perfect 5th, enharmonically the same as the minor 6th, and it is 4 whole steps away.

The next interval is the augmented 7th. The augmented 7th is enharmonically the same as the octave. It is 6 whole steps away.

Lastly is the augmented octave. Now this is very odd but it is exactly like the augmented unison, even the same exact letters. The only difference is that it is an octave higher. It is 6 whole steps and one half step away.

Ok so the next part will be on the diminished interval which is when you lower a perfect or minor interval by a half step. At the end there will be a short review of all the intervals.
