Challenge supporting the use of materials from the Description Unit of OpenFiction Project.

This challenge supports the use of materials found in the Description Unit of the OpenFiction Project, a free and open introductory fiction writing course

The goals of this challenge are to:

• develop a critical vocabulary for discussling description in fictional narrative

• practice identifying and describing elements of description in fictional narrative, and

• learn drafting and revision techniques for improving descripion in your own work.

1. Complete a What if...? description exercise View and Discuss This will help improve your description skills.
2. Bonus Optional Task - Submit your own description exercise to replace the What If...? exercises View and Discuss Help provide others with writing exercises that don't have to be purchased in a text.
3. Examine the descriptive techniques identified by your peers View and Discuss Look for common techniques used by several authors.
4. Provide your definition of what "description" is View and Discuss This will help you develop your critical vocabulary for discussing descriptive technique.
5. Complete the What If...? "Practice writing good, clean prose" exercise View and Discuss As it says, this is your change to practice writing description efficiently.
6. Bonus Optional Task - Submit your own replacement for the "Good, clean prose" exercise View and Discuss Help provide others with writing exercises that don't have to be purchased in a text.
7. Rewrite a descriptive section of your story draft View and Discuss There's always room for improvement--can you make your description more sensory?
8. Examine the well-known opening of Out of Africa View and Discuss Learn from one of the descriptive masters, Isak Dinesen.
9. Identify and rewrite weak description in your story draft View and Discuss This is a revision habit you should develop in all your writing.
