Choose a Domain Registrar

Search the web for the best place to register a domain name

Your first task is to spend up to ten minutes searching the web for someone that you can register a domain name with. Domain names are not bought, they are registered and you pay to register domain names for a set period of time - normally from one or two years.

The rules and regulations surrounding registration of domain names can change from country to country and are also dependant on the country to which the domain name belongs. The registrar you use doesn't have to be in your country, but it should be someone that you're comfortable giving your money to.

Be sure to ask your peers on the challenge discussion page for advice because they will likely have valuable information that you can use in your search for a domain registrar. You may even choose to use the same one. When you've found a registrar you're happy to do business with, this task is complete.

I'm already sitting on a couple domain names through Godaddy, but I am not sure what is involved with hosting. My friend said "Host Gator" is simple with helpful tutorials. He tells me he also used Dreamhost because it supports some higher level PHP languages that some apps require.

I registered my domain ( markdhutchison.ca ) through Yola as part of a promotion for Canadian domains they were having -- free registration. Yola is a domain provider and host. I don't recommend Yola for hosting though since you have to use their sitebuilder to develop your site, which I suppose is great for small businesses and others who want to get a site up but who don't care about the limitations (no FTP access for example).

I have also registered through Godaddy (not recommended), Site5 (happy with them so far) and Retrix (to support a local business).

Does anyone have experience with this one? The price is right but I'm not sure I trust them: http://www.active-domain.com/

My domain names are currently registered with DreamHost. I was hosted with DH for several years.

I have recently migrated my hosting form DH to WebFaction, who do not handle domain registrations. WF has excellent support for Python and Ruby based applications as well as the standard ability to host PHP apps. WebFaction also has support for PostgreSQL databases, including PostGIS support!

Another noteworthy host for consideration, as web hosting is usually purchased alongside of a domain registration, is GreenGeeks.
