Creative Brief Five - Inspired by an Image

“Painting is concerned with all the ten attributes of sight: darkness and light, solidity and colour, form and design, distance and nearness, motion and rest.”

- A Treatise on Painting, Leonardo da Vinci.

“To be concise and short in painting is both necessary and in good taste.  The man who is concise makes one think; the talkative man just irritates you… Also, train your memory, for nature will never give you more than hints.”

- Portrait of Manet, by Himself, Edouard Manet.

The Brief

In 1991 Mitko Panov’s With Hands Raised (Z podniesionymi rekami) won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for best short film.  In 1996 Marcell Iványi won the same award for his short film Wind (Szél).  Both films have a similar origin.  The filmmakers were both inspired by still photographs.

You will work in groups.  Each group will be given an image.  It maybe a photograph or it may be a painting.  Your task is to make a cinematic response to the image that you are given.  Your film must have a narrative, although you do not have to use a traditional three-act structure.  The film should be 3 – 5 minutes in length.

This weeks Obstructions:

  • The camera MUST be on a tripod at ALL times.
  • Your finished film must BEGIN or END with your own representation of your given image.
  • Diegetic sound only.
  • The narrative must take place in a single location.
  • You must reference your chosen image at the end of your film, both visually and with text. z
