Creative Brief Eight- Final Task- Editing Your Reel

“The essence of cinema is editing. It’s the combination of what can be extraordinary images of people during emotional moments, or images in a general sense, put together in a kind of alchemy.”

- Francis Ford Coppola

“Film editing is now something almost everyone can do at a simple level and enjoy it, but to take it to a higher level requires the same dedication and persistence that any art form does.”

- Walter Murch

“A democratic civilization will save itself only if it makes the language of the image into a stimulus for critical reflection — not an invitation for hypnosis.”

- Umberto Eco

The Brief

For the final brief you must creatively and critically bring all of your work together for assessment on the module. This includes the following components:

  1. Creating an individual edited showreel of your work on this module. Using all of the work that you have developed throughout this term. This must be between 2 and 4 minutes long and creatively demonstrate your identity as a filmmaker/cinematographer. You are free to do this in any way you like (and you can add licensed music, narration, graphics etc) to help communicate your cinematic voice.
  2. A critical reflection of your work that includes the following:
    1. 1000 word Analysis of one of your 8 cinematic responses, using one of the theories or approaches that we have explored on the module (Affect, Art, Genre, Psychoanalytic Film Theory, Male Gaze, Montage etc).
    2. 1000 word Critical Reflection and Evaluation of how your approach to your cinematic work ties in to wider contexts related to the study and practice of film (historical, social, cultural), how it links with the work of other filmmakers and how you intend to develop this into your future work.
