The start of the new school year is a critical time to start things right. Here is one list of things to consider for the first day of school.

What are you keys to getting the 2012–13 school year off to a great start in the classroom?

What is your best activity for the first 6 weeks of school?

Nice article on getting the year off to a good start from Rick Wormeli and others.

I just did a very cursory search of twitter on Topsy to discover what amounted to the student perspective on the first couple of weeks of school.  Usually teachers are so worried about their first impressions of their students that they fail to notice that most students (and their parents?) are trying to make first impressions, too.  And they have their fears and hopes as well.  So the first six weeks of school for me will in part be about a heightened awareness of my students' hopes and fears as well as how they are presenting themselves.

What ElsePatty's suggestion is a great idea.  I also found this blog post by  Aditi Rao with 10 ideas with which to start the school year, one of which is the Voki Avatars.  Another of her ideas is to create a Pinterest Board that summarizes themselves. Using Patty's idea, students could guess which board belongs to whom when shared through a blog post by the teacher. You don't need Pinterest accounts to do this, just use a Google Doc and the search bar of Pinterest. You may copy this Google Doc: Pin Yourself, which has the directions. It's a quick activity.

An importat part of starting the year is to build a community within the classroom. Here are some ideas from my class last year: People Power

I look forward to other ideas from this group! As I ask my students, What Else?
