Choose a Domain Registrar

Search the web for the best place to register a domain name

Your first task is to spend up to ten minutes searching the web for someone that you can register a domain name with. Domain names are not bought, they are registered and you pay to register domain names for a set period of time - normally from one or two years.

The rules and regulations surrounding registration of domain names can change from country to country and are also dependant on the country to which the domain name belongs. The registrar you use doesn't have to be in your country, but it should be someone that you're comfortable giving your money to.

Be sure to ask your peers on the challenge discussion page for advice because they will likely have valuable information that you can use in your search for a domain registrar. You may even choose to use the same one. When you've found a registrar you're happy to do business with, this task is complete.

Years ago, I chose to go with Bluehost when registering my domain. I went with this particular provider because a good friend of mine was using Bluehost at the time and was pleased with the service he was receiving. Since that time the company has been spot-on providing everything I need.

I have been looking at different domains for quite a while, and found that it gets quite expensive when you try to host a site.

I went with Borislav suggestion and used uCoz. Happy with it at the moment, will keep you posted with how I get on.

A lot of hosting providers will offer domain registration as a free add-on.

I decided to go the easy/free path all the way and chose one of local hosting providers that offered both free hosting and free domain registration in the ".ho.ua" zone.

But if your website will be active (at least one hit a month) do take a look at uCoz , as they offer free hosting and free domain names, if you're lucky, even in the ".com" zone.

I use Host Monster for my hosting needs and buy all my domain names from Yahoo as I find yahoo to be the most consitiant in a nice first time registration price for a domain name.

    • Enom

    • Tucows

    • Network Solutions

    • Schlund+Partner

I have heard great things about bluehost since I am photographer and use wordpress. It has great service when you have a technical problem. Blue host has unlimited domains, website and space. They have a great price of  a standard $6.95 hosting plan. Hard to beat that.

Since i'm on tight budget I choose http://paylesswebhosting.com/

    its only$ 5.00 a month

    my domain is http://candrphotos.com/wordpress/

I was glad to see that you mentioned Bluehost. I've been using that company's service and have been pleased with everything. By the way, I enjoyed viewing your photographs. I really liked the train shot. I grew up in a town that had trains coming through all of the time. Seeing that photo brought back all kinds of memories.

    Thanks!

Hi Tora, Yes, I found GoDaddy pretty good. Whilst annoying at first, they do take security pretty seriously. Thanks > Subject: Tora posted a new comment at Choose a Domain Registrar in #5 Your Domain. > From:

I registered a few websites with Dreamhost and it's been excellent so far. Their prices are really good and your information is kept private, unlike most other registrars who charge you for this service.

    Hi radial77,

I have heard good things about GoDaddy.  They're very popular here in the UK and they advertise themselves a lot too.

Do you know of any smaller hosting companies?
