Welcome and Introduce Yourself!

Welcome to Technovation Challenge!

This course is a space for mentors and teachers everywhere to chat about their professional challenges, and to share experiences and best practices for working with your teams of Technovation girls. As part of the course, we included places where you can connect and post events and meetings ("meetups") in your area. You can also arrange virtual meetings ("hangouts") to connect with mentors and teachers from around the world.

We have included resources to help guide your personal development. These resources are optional and can be used to start conversations on P2PU, virtual hangouts, or meetups. They may also be helpful during your mentoring experience. Please share your own resources such as links to videos and articles. We will be adding a section for Technovation-specific tips and strategies.

Special thanks to the volunteer NYC-based professional women's group So What's On Your Plate for putting together the resources for this course.

“So What’s On Your Plate” (SWOYP) is a global community that focuses on bringing a diverse group of ambitious women together to foster friendships, build skills relevant to their lifestyles, and give them an avenue to make an impact in their local communities.

You can connect with SWOYP on Facebook and Twitter.

Introduce yourself to other mentors and teachers by adding a comment to this task.

Task Discussion

Hi I'm Shannon. I work as a software planner (conducting user and business research, assessing against current and emerging system capabilities and turning that into product strategy) at a large multi-national. My development work now is strictly personal but is necessary to stay current at work, and am focused on HTML5 and other mobile and inter-device technologies.

We had a girls-only, STEM focused public school shut down here in Portland this year. I was doing volunteer work with them. We're now working to keep the girls interested and motivated as they move into mainstream schools. This challenge as a great opportunity for them to work together and have some fun!

    Hi!

I am a software developer/engineering manager at a company in San Francisco. I've been working as a developer for the past 12 years and am super excited about all the opportunities and programs geared towards bringing more females into the technology field.

I'm really looking forward to mentoring and participating in the Technovation challenge this year.

    Cheers,
    Margaret

Hi I'm a high school Computer Science teacher from Toronto, CANADA and I'm looking forward to leading a group of students through the Technovation challenge this year.

I heard about the challenge during a visit to MIT in July and wanted to give it a try at my school.

    Hello from Alaska!

I am a high school science teacher in Chugiak, AK.  I want to connect my students to what is going on in the rest of the world, so the Technovision Challenge is exciting!  I am introducing the idea to my school this week.

I am hoping I can find women in the community who will help us achieve our goals, however,  I am wondering if it would be easier if we could connect with someone in the "lower 48" (as we refer to the continental US!) via Skype.

We are part of the Anchorage School District.  There are 8 high schools in our district but two of us (Chugiak High School and Eagle River High School) are located about 15/20 miles outside of Anchorage.

I have no experience making Apps so this will be a learning experience all the way around!  I am looking forward this opportunity.

    Hi Cindy!

Welcome! We are thrilled to have your team join Technovation. Chugiak HS was the first to join outside of the "lover 48"! You are making history!
