More Conversation - MeetUps, Groups, Hangouts


This is a place to make plans to connect outside of P2PU, online through Google Hangouts, or through in-person regional events.

Here are some ideas for getting together:

  • Plan a Hack Day (one day App Inventor training - see fall course) with other teams in your area.
  • Plan a group field trip to a tech company with other teams in your area. If there are no tech companies in your area, perhaps you can get together and watch the field trip videos (see fall course).
  • Plan a mentor mixer (social meeting) for professional women in your area. You may want to partner with a local group such as Women 2.0 or NYTechWomen.
  • Plan a career day where teams can meet other mentors in the area and learn more about what they do.
  • Teams that are participating in Technovation Challenge a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time can mentor a sister team, e.g. a team new to Technovation. Depending on where they are located, they may meet in person or virtually to help guide them through the Challenge.

    Reading the last blog, I'd like to add some thoughts. Our team made an app (Swap it) that actually works with a real database, so it's possible that many others did the same. If mentors only look at screen shots, I'm affraid they won't get all the work the girls did.

    Lycee, I get the concern and I'm trying really hard to view the code and actually load the app. This is the first year that judging is working like this and there's obviously some kinks to work out. 

    I have a running list of recommendations for next year already that I'll share with Tahani, Annalise, etc. :-)

    For those of you mentors that are judging, are you having trouble with AppInventor? I'm having server errors each time I try to upload the team's zip file. :( I want to make sure I'm judging them fairly and it's hard to judge the app demo part when I can't try out the app...

    Ok, cool. I'l keep trying. In the meantime, I've judged them based on screenshots but I think seeing the code could help improve their "understanding programming" score.

    Thanks everyone for their persistence. I know some teams included either app demos in their videos and/or screenshots in their slides, so hopefully this will help sort out the rubric for some teams.

    Thanks Angelica�It was good to talk with you too. Hopefully we get a chance to talk again when I'm under less pressure. We pulled it off somehow, even though our audio/video is out of sync�..but it was a time of desperate measures. I'm SO SO SO proud of the girls - Their parents don't even understand what they are doing, but see it as a chance for a good future. Their teacher was not involved. They overcame so many challenges to get where they are�but we focused on their strengths and it all works out and they are happy.     Thoughtworks, the software company I work for, is hosting a documentary screening, charity auction and social mixer to celebrate International Womens Day this Friday 8th March from 6pm - 10:30pm in NYC. The documentary we'll show is "Makers: Women Who Make America" . Food & drinks are provided.

    This is a free public event so please share it with anyone you think might be interested. We're particularly encouraging men to attend too!
