Managing Your Career - Resources and Conversation

In this module, we have included resources on how to ask for raises and promotions, how to represent yourself on a resume, and how to help others recognize your value in an organization ("manage up").

When Katie Corner, our volunteer mentor coordinator in the San Francisco Bay Area polled professional women, she found out that 74% of you wanted to know more about how to ask for a raise and promotion. Here are a few resources compiled by SWOYP on how to ask for raises and promotions:

Asking for a Promotion - Forbes

"So, You Want a Raise..." - WSJ

Salary Negotiation Basics

"How to Ask for a Raise and Get a Yes"

The landscape for resumes is ever-changing. Here are two articles that can give you some ideas.

"The Resume Feedback You Need to Hear That No One is Telling You"

Tips for Getting Hired - Parsons Interaction Design Program

In Katie's survey, 52% of you were interested in learning more about how to help others recognize your value in an organization ("manage up"). Here are some articles that explain this idea further.

I'm a contract web developer with two years experience. It was challenging to get started in the industry. I was a hospice worker before and spent a lot of time on small projects build my skills and portfolio. In the beginning, there weren't a lot of applications that demostrated my skill sets. The more time that I invest in side projects, the better the rate and more jobs that land at my feet. The only detail that matter in these projects is passion. The passion to create something new, something better, something worthwhile. Cheers to everyone invested in broader sets of skills and presentations!
