Set Up Your Hosting

Modify the DNS records for your domain name and point it at your new hosting account

You might have to wait a little while before you can start using your hosting account. Don't worry if you do, you can always come back to this task later on.

In this task you're going to modify the DNS records for your domain name and point it at your new hosting account. The work you done in the previous challenge on DNS is really going to pay off. This task should take you a few minutes.

The theory behind what you have to do is the same regardless of who you bought your domain or hosting from, but the practical application of this theory will be different in every case. But don't worry, it's very simple.

  1. Get the IP address of the server that your hosting account is located on. You should have received this information from your host. Get in touch with them if you don't have it.
  2. Login to the website that you bought the domain from and find the screen that allows you to edit the DNS records for your domain. Modify the 'A record' for yourdomain.com and set the IP address for the 'A record' to the IP address of your hosting account.
  3. Finally you want to modify or add the DNS record for www.yourdomain.com and set it as a CNAME record for yourdomain.com.

Now you just have to wait for up to 24 hours ( although it's normally a lot sooner than that) for the DNS information for your domain to propagate across the internet. When everything is done, your hosting account should now be available by typing http://yourdomain.com into your web browser.

I installed a Kloxo Panel to my VPS i.e. Virtual Private Server & pointed my Domain to my VPS's Ip address!
I had turned my main domain into the nameservers so that now i just have to place that nameserver in the new domains (No more IP Configs! :D )

Since I didn't want to register a fully commercial domain at the moment, I just decided to use a free one offered by the host I used which is  000webhost.com and my current domain name is www.simpledeveloper.co.nf which is still propagating before it is live. Please check out a blog post I created today on web hosting and all the little details that go into such.

Thanks to having registered a domain with my hosting company (Bluehost) years ago, moving my P2PU blog over to that location was super simple. My P2PU journal blog, The Visitor now resides at the following web address: http://www.preclectic.com/visitor/--right next door to my other blog, Preclectic.

I'd be delighted for all of my P2PU peers to drop by and take a look at either blog.

    Thanks!
    :-)

As registrar is never free, you can find some free web hosting service, I personnaly tested Olympus Network who gives its DNS :

    Olympe NS 1 : ns1.olympe-network.com - IP: 178.32.96.38
    Olympe NS 2 : ns2.olympe-network.com - IP: 91.121.48.195

Then you just have to copy paste these lines in your registrar's DNS form.

I've been looking around and trying to see which things actually work. I can already accept the domain but whatever I do, whichever address I try to add on the forwarding, the system tells me that the address is on the block list. I don't get so, I guess, I'd have to do this properly.

Which means, I can't properly finish #5 and #6 unless I properly register a domain and get a proper host.

Of course if you register and host with the same company, which seems to me rather common, you won't have to do this step, since the host will have taken care of this internally for you.
