Standard Set Answer:LSA intrigues me because I've used it and suspect it can work when you shake up the lingo properly, but it has defied my attempts to date to make it 'tell me something useful' about my data to date so I wish to change that state of affairs.
I hope to learn to understand the math deeply.
I'm not interested in helping with course organization.
I have experience with VB, .NET, C#, eVB, some Python, large databases. An algorithm I think of as a codifying of the procedures, routines, methods (that specify state changes) between input and output for some object.

an algorithm is a method for calculating a function

I've been learning how to program for some time now. Began way back trying to learn C and stopped shortly after beginning. Years later I learned about Ruby and Python, but life got in the way and I stopped learning after about six months. For the past year I've been focused on Python and Javascript. It's been going well, but there's still much I need to understand.

Standard Set Answer:
I'm interested in Computer Linguistics as I really love all the nuances of language and technology. I'm fascinated by machine learning as I want to know how my phone knows what I'm trying to type. The idea of automatic translation by computers is intriguing and something that really piqued with me while living in Korea, teaching English.
I hope to learn more about the field of computer linguistics by participating in this course.
I am not interested in helping with course organization.
I have some programming experience. I understand the basics, but still have great difficult putting together and fully-working, robust program from beginning to end.
Most of my programming experience is with Python.
An algorithm is an accepted, repeatable way to solve a problem.

Standard Set Answer:Basically, I a a gud fan of Python, cause it is simple and super-useful.
i would be hoping to achieve a gud programming experience.
yes, i would be really happy to give my best efforts. :)
yes, i have programming experience.
yes, i have experience at Python coding, but i am not an expert at it.
An algorithm is a basic skeleton of a code. It is like a sketch of our code.

Standard Set Answer:1. I began learning computer programming a while ago. I started with Python and have been trying to learn other languages/frameworks/environments. I took an interest early on in machine learning, especially with regard to manipulating large datasets. I'm still very much a beginner, but I have a huge thirst for knowledge, especially in the area of machine learning and natural language processing.
2. My goal is simple: I hope to learn as much as I can. As I said, I'm still a beginner, so I don't think I'll be the one to make huge breakthroughs. I hope to learn and to share with others interested in the same thing.
3. No, I am not interested in helping with the course organization. Not right now, at any rate. Maybe sometime in the future that will change, but no for now.
1. I have some programming experience. I'm still pretty much getting started, but I've learned a lot and continue practising and experimenting every day.
2. My experience in programming is almost solely in Python, so yes.
3. Great question. An algorithm, simply put, is a step-by-step process or procedure for calculating something. It is a set of rules - an instruction set - that calculates a function. The function can be anything you want, but for all intents and purposes, the number of steps is finite. We think of algorithms today mostly in terms of computations done on a computer, but algorithms actually have a very, very long history in mathematics. I personally like to think of algorithms more generally as a sequence of steps that "accomplish something" - that is, I don't restrict the term to just computer science or mathematics. To me, I follow an algorithms when I tie my shoes, or when I cook a casserole. As a visual artist and sound design, I follow very specific sets of rules for producing my "aesthetic object", that could, in theory, be reproduced by a computer or robot. So I see a very wide application for algorithms in and outside of computer science - design being one example that doesn't necessarily have to involve computers.

I am interested in NLP because I work at the Library of Congress. I believe that the NLP knowledge would dovetail into many facets of library functions
Location: Washington DC
Standard Set Answer:* I believe that the NLP knowledge would dovetail into many facets of library functions. Also, I believe that much off the text that comes from the congress could be analyzed/classified in an automated fashion
* I hope that I will learn the basics of NLP (as well as some more advanced topics), also I want to be exposed to more code and coding techniques to improve my overall code base, finally I hope to learn enough that I can teach others at the library
* As needed and as time permits
* I have a fair amount of programming experience in made languages starting with BASIC and presently Python
* We are writing a major project with Python/Django to replace one of the legacy systems here at the library. We are writing the ETL from the legacy to new database using a combination of SqlAlchemy and Django.
* A step by step procedure for doing a particular task.
