Develop online instructional materials that are engaging and effective in this course for K-12 educators

Online and blended classrooms are a fast-growing trend in K-12 education and provide some unique opportunities for engaged learning. If you are teaching online or in a blended classroom or going to doing so soon, this is the course for you.

In this course, you will work on creating your own online learning environment in the tool of your choice. Be prepared to do some hands-on course building and to be both a learner and a teacher as a part of this course community.

posted message: I am about to start on a project with "CMC" (http://www.cmc-china.org/) which has a number of schools and centers around the country. Pg 21 on this doc could also be helpful (http://matthewramcharan.posterous.com/pages/projects). Based on the conditions of a CMC student with poor English skills I need to build an education plan to improve students English and then get them at least through core high school subjects using only online tools. Every student has a computer and an internet connection available with an unlimited time to learn. Constraints are 1) needs to be low cost 2) have a teaching facilitator but all learning should be online. Question: If personal teacher interaction is over Skype is that considered blended learning?

    Casey, that's an interesting question.

In the simplest definition of "blended," I would say your idea is blended because it combines f2f and online instruction.

However, if Skype is the online online component, this lacks the components of "anywhere-anytime learning" and of encouraging learner independence.  Are you including other online learning opportunities, such as online lessons, practice opportunities, etc.? Perhaps you could do some of that as a part of this course. (There are some great existing ESL materials you could draw on.)

    What do others here think?
