As I read this, I can't help but wonder where the best place to research some of Ivan's claims could be. Intuitively, and personally, I love what he's saying.. yet I know that he's not backing up anything with figures. I'd love to see good literacy figures in different communities. Is there anything empirical kicking around worth looking at?
@Maria Droujkova At the moment we can't reply to wall posts, but we can use the Tasks (eg. http://new.p2pu.org/en-US/groups/deschooling-society-an-open-book-group/content/read-the-first-chapter-of-deschooling-society/) as a place to frame discussion around specific topics.

Homeschooling and unschooling grew "a bit" since the book came out: for example, about 7% of US kids with college educated parents are now educated by families. However, peer groups, communities and networks form a separate phenomenon - not quite "do it yourself." As many of my colleagues in homeschooling explain, "It's not at home, and it's not schooling" - not by yourself and not in an institution.
