I was made interesting in this topic by redesigning the website template used by the professors at a magnet school I attend to use up-to-date web standards and a better design overall. I hope to achieve a better grasp of HTML5, and its use in current web designs in order to start a web design business. Since I'm new to P2PU, I am not interested in organization, in order to not hold the group back.

I’ve recently returned to my hometown, Chicago, after working at a daily newspaper less than 2 miles from the beach. After 9 years in LA, I’m still trying to remember how quickly Midwestern weather changes in a day. After a few extra semesters, I graduated from Ball State University with a Journalism degree specific to newspaper and magazine design. I still consider myself extremely lucky for the experience I had – which included working with the staff who won the first World’s Best Designed newspaper award given to a college newspaper. I grew up in a household that read both the Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Times every Sunday morning and developed a great love for newspapers. Now, after seeing my former newsroom decimated by layoffs, I worry about the state of the industry. I know newspapers will survive, there’s too many people like me who love to read, love to write and love the feeling of news breaking in the middle of the night. There’s a place for us out there, we just have to create it.

As a print designer, web design is a natural next step for me. I'm interested in seeing how my design skills translate to the web. I've been trying to teach myself HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver but I get frustrated when things don't work the way they say they're supposed to work in books, tutorials and videos. Sometimes, I just need someone to ask and vice versa. If I've managed to figure something out, hell yeah, I'm going to pass that info on to the person who needs it.
