9. Final Activity - Simple Gifts

Simple Gifts is a Shaker song written and composed in 1848 by Elder Joseph Brackett. I have been impressed by its message for a very long time, and believe it contains many lessons relevant to open educational resources, remixing, and open education generally. For your last activity of the course, write an essay or record a video in which you apply the many messages of Simple Gifts to participants in the open education community. What lessons can we learn from the song? Specifically, how do they pertain to us? (This is, at its heart, a revise/remix activity in the spirit of OER!)

'Tis the gift to be simple,
'tis the gift to be free,
Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we shan't be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come 'round right.
