Standard Set Answer:
As an educationist I feel I should have read this book already, I even have it in my bookshelf, but so far I've always had an excuse not to. Now I not only get to read it, I'll even have the chance to discuss it with people. I'm not a big skeptic of traditional school as such, but I'm very interested in alterative ways of thinking about schooling, and trying out new things. I'm sure it will be quite controversial, but I also think it will have some good points, which makes it all the more important to discuss it, and not just put it down and forget about it.

I'm interested in making science and research more accessible and open, and ways in which we can re-invent the role and placement of education in society. I'm also actively a member of both a traditional institution of higher education and very involved in p2pu.

Bio:
My name is Alex Halavais (the “s” is silent) and I am a social architect, interested in ways of helping form communities of creativity, freedom, and justice. In particular, I help people to discover ways in which social media changes the nature of scholarship and learning, and allows for new forms of collaboration and self-government.
I am an associate professor at Quinnipiac University, where I teach in a masters program in interactive communications. I formerly directed a masters program in informatics at the University at Buffalo, and was Research Director for the New Media Research Lab at the University of Washington. I am vice president of the Association of Internet Researchers and serve as the Technical Director of the Digital Media and Learning Hub based at the University of California Humanities Research Institute.
Location: New York, NY
Standard Set Answer:
I read Deschooling Society many years ago, and--as I recall--found it deeply releiving to read something that so clearly reflected what I felt was a natural understanding of learning and learning institutions. I also recall that I brissled at some of the characterizations of learning, and that I found others impractical.
I recently reread Small Is Beautiful, a book that likewise had a positive impact on my when I was younger, and found it far less palatable than I had remembered. I certainly hope the same isn't true of Illich :).
I am excited to be reading this with a group of people who are interested not just in the ideas being put forward, but what that means for concrete action. What does it mean to have a school without schooling?

I'm a part of a unique program whose founder's were heavily influenced by Illichs' work, and many other radical educators (Paolo Friere, etc.) I have the book sitting in a pile on my chair, and I'm looking forward to digging in along with some other change agents! =)
