This course will become read-only in the near future. Tell us at community.p2pu.org if that is a problem.

Week Six [Aug. 16, 2011, 9:59 a.m.]

  Share and Review

During this session you will explore what it means to differentiate instruction in specific content areas and review general strategies for differentiating instruction in the classroom. You will also finish and share your lesson plan with your colleagues.

  Readings

Mapping a Route Toward Differentiated Instruction, Carol Ann Tomlinson
This article describes techniques used by three classroom teachers. As you read, think about your lesson plan: will it be similar to one of the three?

  Activities

  1. Online Resources
Review this list of online resources that contains links to articles, sample units, and questionnaires about differentiated instruction.
    • Follow one link of interest under the “Instructional Theory”, “Practical Tips for the Classroom”, and “Sample Units and Lessons” sections.
    • Do these resources spark any new ideas about how to differentiate your instruction? What are they?
    • Think about the Lesson Plan Template that you have been developing. Now that you have seen these resources, do you want to add or modify anything in your lesson plan?

  2. Final Project
Complete the Differentiating Instruction to Accommodate Learning Styles: Lesson Plan Template, and then review your entire final project and make any necessary changes. Think about the content-specific information that you read at The Access Center website. Does this information help you refine your final project at all? When you have finished your lesson plan, post it in this session’s discussion forum, along with a brief description. Please note that posting of a completed Lesson Plan Template is a requirement for successful completion of this workshop. Contact your facilitator directly if you have any questions about this requirement.

  3. Final Survey
Take a moment to complete the Final Survey. Your anonymous feedback is extremely valuable, and helps us make improvements in the workshop. To take the survey, click on the "Surveys" link in the course navigation bar. Please note that completion of the Final Survey is a requirement for successful completion of this workshop.

  Discussion

In the discussion forum, post your lesson plan and describe at least one strategy you will employ to differentiate instruction and provide multiple pathways for your students to learn. Please offer feedback on at least one of your colleagues’ lesson plans.
