Week 1: Introductions

Welcome to Multimedia and Graphics for Deeper Learning. I am excited to share what I have learned about making multimedia and graphics more effective for student learning. I am also eager to learn from your experiences and knowledge of multimedia for learning.

Much of what I will present here is based upon the research of Richard E. Mayer, Ruth Colvin Clark, and collaborators. While I tend to agree with most of their findings, you may have different opinions. Feel free to courteously disagree with any ideas in a constructive manner.

P2PU Philosophy

  • Peer Learning Community - While I will provide learning resources, participants should feel free to share resources they have found valuable in their practice. Participants are encouraged to learn from each other and I hope to learn from you as well.
  • Open Sharing - Content in this course and on P2PU is openly licensed with a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC-BY). That means whatever you contribute on the site can be shared with others as long as they attribute the source.
  • Customized Learning - You own your learning, so steer your learning to meet your needs. If you have questions or needs - post them on the Activity Wall or whereever appropriate in the class.

P2PU Tips

  • Activity Wall - This is a good place to post general questions.
  • You will get notifications by email indicating activity in the course such as posting comments, new materials, etc. You may find you are getting too much email. You can control which messages are sent to you by going to: My P2PU --> Edit Profile --> Notifications and toggle some categories of messages off.
  • Some tasks in this course can be edited by participants. If you have corrections or something important to add, click the Edit button and make your contributions. Anything you do can be undone.
  • We will use tools on the P2PU site, as well as others. Some links will bring you off the site to other online resources. If you have a useful resource, feel free to add it by editing the task, or adding it via comments.

Task Discussion

  • Andrew   April 10, 2012, 5:52 p.m.

    Hi, I am Andrew.

I have worked with streaming media for a little over 10 years, building a windows media streaming platform in the business school I work at. I also have some experience with designing teaching spaces (classroom A/V suited for in-person and remote teaching).

I am also a doctoral student in education and will soon start my dissertation about online learning, specifically with assessment.

I am hoping to broaden my understanding of teaching and learning through multimedia, with specific interest on use of such techniques in online learning.

Nice to be with all of you!

    Hi There

I'm Liz and I am interested in taking some time to think about how multimedia and graphics might be effective integrated into some online resources that I am starting to develop. I'll be using Moodle as the platform but really would like to move beyond the simpler media activiites that I currently use. I am also doing some work in Digital storytelling 10 with Jim Groom, so that has awakened my curiousity as to different creative options that could be possible activities. Looking forward to learning and sharing with others...

That's excellent, Liz. Did you hear about P2PU through DS106? I am friends with Alan and Jim, but haven't leaped into DS106 yet (except as an interested observor.)

    Hi Liz--

I think you will find some of the ideas presented in this course helpful. Principles put forth in this course apply to all forms of multimedia, whether in person or online. Moodle is a great platform!

    Hi There

I'm on the edges of DS106 doing what I can manage each week. Open courses are great for getting your toes in the water. I would certainly go 'around' again in DS106 and expand my skills further. It's a bit of leap of faith but I wanted to start working in some different ways, developing some creative skills which I hope to bring to the use of multimedia/graphics. Some fantastic tasks which are certainly adaptable to any learning situation. Leap in......... when you get a window. Heaps of fun.

Got started on P2PU because I'm perpetually curious and 'found it'. Just completed the Networked Teacher on P2pU

Hi, I'm Karen. I took this course last year and learned a ton from it. I'm back this time to refresh and to see what I can learn from others.

  • Rayna   Feb. 4, 2012, 3:09 a.m.

Hi I'm Rayna, I teach beginners Japanese and Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE).

I hope to use multimedia more critically and effectively in the classroom so that my students and myself are getting the most out of it. I think multimedia is immensely useful in SOSE, but I'm still seeking methods and resources for its use in language teaching.

    Welcome Rayna!

I hope you find the class valuable. I've worked hard to condense and make the materials covered easily accessible. I will be redoing the audio and perhaps make other changes to the multimedia within the class before we get stated.

The ideas covered here will be useful in any content area. With luck, perhaps you will find someone else in the course with similar interests and find an opportunity to collaborate!
