DRAFT-UNDER CONSTRUCTION

 

This is a six week course on student engagement and checking for understanding. Participants are expected to examine their own ideas about engagement and checking for understanding, as well as to freely share with other partipants about their experiences and the context of where, who, and how they instruct.

Week One-

  • Setting up of group learning agreements.
  • Sharing of educational background and experiences.
  • Pre-survey and online discussion of ideas about student engagement.

Week Two-

  • Discussion of educational systems, pedagogies, and context and how these differences may influence ideas about proper classroom activity.
  • Webinar to further examine ideas about engagement.
  • Reading of 2 articles to with differing ideas about engagement and debate about ideas in articles.

Week Three

  • Observation and discussion of classroom videos to examine ideas about engagement.
  • Learning about the concept of engagement within a "Direct Instruction" Framework.
  • Practicing engagement strategies in our own classrooms and sharing our experiences with one another.

Week Four

  • Presurvey and online ideas about checking for student understanding.
  • Watching videos that present methods of checking for understanding and discussing those videos as a group.
  • Webinar to further discuss ideas surrounding checking for understanding.

Week Five

  • Reading material on checking for understanding methods and discussing as a group which methods we find most useful.
  • Trying out CFUs in our own classrooms and bringing back our experiences to share and discuss.
  • Learning about the concept of CFUs within a "Direct Instruction" framework.

Week Six

  • Examining engagement and CFUs within the context of common standards.
  • Sharing how our ideas have solidified or changed within the course.
  • Filling out a end-of-course survey.
