Learning Objectives

  • Define a vector, or arc, in the context of mapping.
  • Describe points, lines, and areas (polygons). How are they related?
  • Name one or more vector file formats.
  • Describe SVG Maps and SVG Geographic Coordinate Systems. How are they useful? What are your thoughts on the SVG standard?
  • Describe Geography Markup Language.
  • Create a simple SVG image. If you need an editor, try Inkscape or Krita.
  • Share your vector image with the class.
