Reflections and Sharing

Friday and Saturday groups can work to complete their machinima.  Remember to keep it simple and fun.  On Thursday June 14 we will have the REVEAL!

Red Carpet event  in Second Life at TBA - invite your friends to the Premier.

This will be a time to celebrate the successes and reflect on the process - perhaps start thinking of next steps.  Remember that the purpose is to learn, improve our practice and better support our students.

Consider your students:

  • What did you learn from this week that may change the way you work with students?
  • What skills (technical an non-technical) will your students need prior to participating in a machinima project?
  • What skills do you need to work on for yourself as an educator in using this stategy with students?

    Well, the course has inspired me to dust off some old skills and learn some new ones.   The lesson on camera movement 101 by builders brewery was excellent,   I did my first ever proper photo shoot using fraps and capturing frames to paint shop pro.  I have dug out an old 2005 game called The Movies and Im going to rapid prototype something cool.

    Maybe we were in the same 101 class, Inglorious!  it helped me a lot, too. I also use FRAPS for video screen capturing, but I haven't used Paint Shop Pro in a while. For editing/output/producing videos (which I am a total noob at!)  I'm using a combination of Cyberlink Power Director and AVS Video Converter, both good and fairly low-cost PC computer solutions.

    Here are some recent examples  i saw of using machinima for training - a serious subject.  Does this use perhaps cause you to think of ways you can use machinma to teach?

    For me,  I'm really looking at how tacit (internal) knowledge becomes explicit using Machinima. I see this all the time in screencapture done for videogames and MMORPGs.

    Some of the best examples I see of training especially tacit knowledge conversion is at Fat Boss 

    I also see Machinima in general as way of doing outreach to educators who do not understand the deep learning that can take place in immersive learning environments.

    I'm involved in a project where I will probably be directing a large group of people to make tutorials for ePortfolios.  Some of them are going to be video tutorials, and it might be more interesting to use machinima clips in some of them.

    Both of these CliniSpace examples make me think of potential machinima applications in my higher ed education environment, where my university has a new private island (partly administered by me) and a budding online nursing program that already wants to use Second Life for virtual simulations such as these.  Now I have something to aspire to!

    Emphasis on teamwork and collaboration between the actors,as shown in these videos, is something that I will try to incorporate in any educational machinima I'll produce.

    I am curious as to the roles people took this week...we worked in pairs and in groups - not everyone was comfortable filming but all the roles were necessary.  Did you have a favorite?  What part did you like doing best?  Why?

    Well, I enjoyed jumping around and showing off!  The hardest part for me is camera work.....I'm not very skilled with the camera.  In SL, I tend to use the camera hud that comes with the viewer, which is rather awkward.

    My main goal in taking this course was to learn more about the behind-the-scenes filming of Machinima for educational and other interests, so, without hesitation, I can say filming was my favorite role! I had the camera running much of the time on Wed. night without being prompted,  trying to get in some practice and become more comfortable with camera moves by keyboard commands - still pretty wobbly!

    Florian, where can I learn how to operate the camera with keyboard commands only?  I'm a mac person traditionally, so I never learned keyboard commands.  I have a pc now.  Is there anyplace I can go to learn that?

    Cynthia,  there is a list of keyboard commands/shortcuts at:,

    but they left out my very favorite one: If you alt + click on a certain place (or avatar) on the screen, that becomes the new central focus (re-centers the screen) of the camera action for zooming, close-ups, orbiting around, etc.

    However, the basic camera keyboard commands became real and hands-on to me in an "SL Filmaking 101" class at Builder's Brewery - A great SL group to join with many classes in SL each month! Check out their schedule:
