Standard Set Answer:A blog post by Lorenz Matzat about a seminar regarding Python and data journalism.
I want to get a general knowledge of how to program. I'm not interested in becoming a "walking command refenrence". Instead I want to attain enough knowledge to understand central aspects of programming, enabling me to implement things in Python, Java, Perl, whatever fits the selected case best.
Yes, I could help in organization, but don't know if I might be of any use.
Don't know, I assume I could fit meetings in every one of those days.
For me 8pm would be perfect.
1 hour should be enough. If there's need, more time would be possible.

I am a journalist at Agency for Policy Expertise, Belarus. Also blogging about open data at opendata.by.
In this course I want to learn web-scraping and some basic database management to make and run simple applications. So far I have very little knowledge of programming, including Python.
To get myself busy I'm thinking of coding this analogue Mathematics Competency Test for Journalists into an interactive one like the Statistical numeracy test. presented recently by N. Kayser-Bril. I hope this won't be too difficult but if you know that it isn't going to work or wish to join me - you're more then welcome to comment.
Professionally I'am interested in visualizing crime statistics, poll and government spending data. Geographically it is mostly Belarus, and I'am also planning to expand my interest on to Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
Location: Minsk, Belarus
Standard Set Answer:- I may use it my job.
- Have more fun in learning python
- Probably (what is that?)
- Thursday is fine (else Wednesday or Tuesday)
- 8.30 pm is ok (else 9 pm)
- 1 h 30 is fine

I'm a editor at a magazine that focuses on renewable energy.
Location: Bielefeld, Germany
Standard Set Answer:What made you interested in this topic?
I always liked storys, that where based on good data. Then I got into this topic by a data driven eductaion by Lorentz Matzat in early 2011
What do you hope to achieve by participating?
I would like to enhance my skills in getting good data and hope to use it later for some articles, in private and for work
Are you interested in helping with the study group organization?
Shure, but I have some other fixed appointements. So my time is limited and I would prefer not to go to deep into organization stuff. But I'll help with the small thinks if you need me.
Which day would be best? (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday)?
All days mentioned above are OK with me.
Which time (CEST) would be best to meet (8pm, 8.30 pm 9pm)?
I would prefer 8pm.
How long should the study group meet online (1 hour, 1 h 30min, 2 hour)?
depends on the starting time. When we start at 8pm two hours are OK.

Considering me working fulltime, often late, 9 pm would be my prefered time. Thuesdays or Wednesdays would do it for me. Duration: Probably between 1h and 1h30.

I'm a recent college graduate and I studied continental philosophy and critical theory in college. I'm a proponent of free software and open web technologies and I'm interested in the intersection of free software and radical politics.
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Standard Set Answer:I'm interested in programming in general because it more and more seems like the literacy of the 21st century. I'm interested in python in particular because I've heard it's easy to use (thus lowering the bar to the above-mentioned literacy) and in playing around with it a tiny bit I've found this to be true. So I guess I'm hoping to learn how to build robust applications the hard way with an easy programming language.
Tuesday or Wednesday would be best, either early morning or evening. I think a 1 hour meeting is good to start and if we want to extend it to 1.5 or 2 that's ok. My preferences for times would be 7-8am CEST, 8-9am CEST, 8-9pm CEST, or 9-10pm CEST. (I'm in EEST)

Standard Set Answer:Data is ubiquitous. But is sometimes hard to get and often not easy to understand. I hope that knowledge about python will help me to extract and understand data sets or at least will help me to comunicte with programmers. I'm happy to help with the organization of this study group.
