• My employer, a major public broadcaster in Germany, is currently regrouping its efforts, resulting in an increased presence in the Internet. Data journalism is one of the currently sadly underdeveloped fields (actually, not just at our station). In addition to an employer-sponsored seminar, I'd like to learn more about the possibilities of data journalism here.
• Unfortunately, I won't have the extra time to help with organizational issues.

I want to get a general knowledge of how to program. I'm not interested in becoming a "walking command refenrence". Instead I want to attain enough knowledge to understand central aspects of programming, enabling me to implement things in Python, Java, Perl, whatever fits the selected case best.

What made you interested in this topic?

I always liked storys, that where based on good data. Then  I got into this topic by a data driven eductaion by Lorentz Matzat in early 2011

What do you hope to achieve by participating?

I would like to enhance my skills in getting good data and hope to use it later for some articles, in private and for work

Shure, but I have some other fixed appointements. So my time is limited and I would prefer not to go to deep into organization stuff. But I'll help with the small thinks if you need me.

How long should the study group meet online (1 hour, 1 h 30min, 2 hour)?

depends on the starting time. When we start at 8pm two hours are OK. 

I read about it in Lorenz Datablog. I am working as journalist and would love to increase my skills.

Considering me working fulltime, often late, 9 pm would be my prefered time. Thuesdays or Wednesdays would do it for me. Duration: Probably between 1h and 1h30.

I'm interested in programming in general because it more and more seems like the literacy of the 21st century. I'm interested in python in particular because I've heard it's easy to use (thus lowering the bar to the above-mentioned literacy) and in playing around with it a tiny bit I've found this to be true. So I guess I'm hoping to learn how to build robust applications the hard way with an easy programming language.

Tuesday or Wednesday would be best, either early morning or evening. I think a 1 hour meeting is good to start and if we want to extend it to 1.5 or 2 that's ok. My preferences for times would be 7-8am CEST, 8-9am CEST, 8-9pm CEST, or 9-10pm CEST. (I'm in EEST)

Data is ubiquitous. But is sometimes hard to get and often not easy to understand. I hope that knowledge about python will help me to extract and understand data sets or at least will help me to comunicte with programmers. I'm happy to help with the organization of this study group.

I tried to learn Python with another group of reporters a year ago.

Tuesday nights are terrible for me.

I should say I tried to go with another group a year ago, and that fell apart -- with aid from me. =)  Not sure group efforts and my life are terribly compatible.

i love the idea to study with practitioners who are interested in the same topic. by participating i hope to achieve basic skills in python and data scraping.
