The Knight-Mozilla learning lab blends learning and training via live webinars featuring leading digital journalism thinkers and open-web innovators.

This four-week course will facilitate a fire hose of new thinking about the nexus of software, journalism and news. Over the next few weeks, you’ll be working on your own ideas to help shape the future of the news industry that we’ll invite you to pitch.

A knowledge (and love) of the open web is helpful for this course…an interest in learning more is essential.

posted message: Hi everyone: I have been getting questions from some of you about journalism and newsroom culture and practice to help you frame your projects. I suspect many have similar questions, so rather than answer individually, I'll post answers publicly so everyone can benefit. I have experience in large print (newspapers, some magazine), online and broadcast news organizations. I aim to post answers by Thursday. Fire away!

After a run-in with four thugs, a hard drive crash and an Internet connection approximating dial-up speeds, video answers to the questions I received are up in my MozNewsLab Q&A album on Vimeo:

    • Q&A 1: News culture: Pitching to journalists [via Matt Terenzio]
    • Q&A 2:. Newsroom practice: Who obtains photos [via Juan Gonzales]
    • Q&A 3: News culture: News categories [via Corbin Smith]

I hope that at least a few of you can get some benefit from the answers, even if only to serve as a final check.

Thanks for these Saleem! Glad that you were still able to get the videos produced despite the altercations in the park. :)

You're not the only one who's glad about it, Alex! It's just fortunate that things didn't turn out worse and that some of the rest of the group found the videos useful.

    Hi everyone,

Those of you who sent me questions or asked for feedback about newsroom or journalistic practices and/or how they fit with your project have all received answers directly.

The broad sharing part of my enterprise is somewhat delayed by a little thing called life, so apologies for the delay. Your questions were surprisingly specific, so I'll post more generalized answers that were the root of the questions a little later.

MozNewsLab members can connect with me on Google+ via http://plusya.com/saleemkhan , which may make this crocess easier.

Be sure to send me a message to let me know you're a MozNewsLabber so I can add you to my circles. It's sometimes tough pick people out of the random strangers. :)

    Thanks, Saleem!  :)

You — and all of the MozNewsLab members — are welcome! I know how weird and arcane newsrooms, journalism practice and conventions can be.

Some conventions are relics of circumstances that no longer exist and some are still practised for still-valid reasons, although they may not be apparent to non-journalists.

So, if anyone needs help understanding how newsrooms and news production work, or framing their project and how it fits within the context of newsroom or journalistic practice, let me know.
