Task Discussion

  • Ivan-4b   March 21, 2013, 1:59 a.m.

Hogar Dulce Hogar have not yet told us what is the amount of money they are going to exactly need. They do know what for though. Observing them in the last few days we have seen them and talking to people in the club we do know what the money will be used for. As we have mentioned before we will need money to pay for transportation for the children, as the kids are going on field trips, its possible that the club will have to provide them with a small meal. When the activities are inside, money will be bused for the material needed for the activities that the kids will be doing. Since this money is meant to last for a while since the club is constantly active a more accurate amount will be 15000 pesos.

Hi again, Olivia tells us that every house has a cost of 94,000 pesos. Of these, 25,000 are paid by ATM, 15,000 by the Mexican Government, 4,000 by the family that will get the house, and the rest is paid by donations. This means that for each house to get built their needs to be 50,000 pesos of donations. This is the amount of money we will try to get to build houses. But as Olivia told us every donation as small as it may be is accapted by the foundation

    Budge Update

WE are going to need 7500 pesos to donate to this Hogar Dulce Hogar. This money is going to be used to transport orphans so they can take part in cultural, social and recreational activities. This money will also be used for any material needed to provide to them when there is an activity that requires certain materials, such as gifts for them and stuff.

It has been decided to the grant and money that is acquired will go to the Harvard Mexico Foundation. Are there any new ways to teach children were you don't have to spend so much money? That's our main focus. Maybe some laptops with low prices and a good internet network are essential requirements in order to help this children. We should also consider new methods for teaching our future generations. Prepared teachers and accurate facts and information when teaching are crucial because if not, it will just backfire against the cause.

You can involve and ask the Library staffs to help with specific areas of education too, and this serves as a Media Respunrce Project for them that can help with certain areas needing help.  Also, not forget utilizing the opporunity for School Improvement meetings tat can be sources of helping these areas, ask Ms Gallie about this possiblity.

Very interesting ideas, we like how you want to help with the laptops because technology has become a very important part in education. We agree that the Harvard Mexico Foundation is a good option and i hope you get what you want.

  • benjamin-1a   March 12, 2013, 10:19 p.m.

As a group we have decided to write the grant and the money that we obtain will go to the Harvard  Mexico Foundation. This foundation works so that it can give money to students who want a post-graduate degree.

We are not sure however if there is a minimum amount of money that this foundation accepts, if they accept any amount. We wrote an email to them but we haven't heard back from them yet. We hope that any amount that we gain from the grant will be acceptable.

I agree with your concerns of the minimum amount since post graduate degrees are quiet expensive, if this project needs too much money you could concentrate on a bigger clientel such as money for high school or undergraduate degrees etc

Please find out how much money do you need because you will need this at the time of writing you grant.

I recomend not to publish the inquiries of you team and find out the answers to these in order to portray an informed paper.

    Budget for DAYA

    • We would need internet and laptops for the kids to help them develop their understanding and learning. Internet cable would be for about $149 pesos per month, and the most affordable laptops can range from $6,000-10,000 pesos.
    • The laptops would probably need the microsoft software if it is not free on the internet or already included in the laptop and it would range from $4,000-5,000 pesos.
    • There wouldn't be any shipping costs since they would be bought in Mexico. And we are still waiting for a response seeing what else they need so that we could fix our budget and adapt it to the new costs.

Budget for Rosa De la Torre

    • The money that we are requesting will be used to buy supplies such as: color pencils, pens, backpacks, cases, and erasers.
    • We believe that its also important to buy computers because internet is a great source of learning.
    • We will buy the cheapest computers so we can offer more.
    • Computers can be refurbished
    • The money will also be spent on pantries.
    • All this supplies will first be delivered to those people that need them the most.

Do these children have acces to the internet? Are laptops the best idea for them? Maybe you might want to consider some form of learning for these children that does not rely on sensitive and somewhat fragile equipment

Internet may be a good idea to consider. Don't buy them computers if they can't access the internet. maybe you could buy only 2 or 3 computers and use the rest of the money to install an internet connection, but a cheap one.

Our team thinks you should only buy 1 or 2 computers per classroom so that you ca afford more material and internet for this students.

We also belief that its more important to buy, color pencils, pens backpacks, cases, books and erasers before you buy the computers, because this are vital for studiyng while the computer and the internet is a secondary source of learning and much more expensive.

Have you considered the fact that using computers and internet could be way more expensive than what you think it is? These children are not professionals with technology yet, and they could have trouble using this equipment resulting in the decomposition of them and having to spend more money. Besides this, I agree with the fact that we should supply poor children with education.

Also consider investing in a pgroam that could get students to ASF over the summer, summer of even 2014 or fall/evenng workshops to give opportunities to students at ASF that has facilities and internet, volunteers willing to show students from outside ASF how to manipulate programs, etc..

Just like it's been commented before: will the internet be of easy access for the children who receive the computers or has that not been confirmed. An idea would be to gather books or other teaching materials that don't necessarily rely on the internet. Also if there isn't enough money to obtain computers and other utensils how will they be able to pay continuosly for the internet access.

Having these students come to ASF is a nice connection, a good use of resources, and a great way to add value and increase your own participation. I think potential funders would like this.

Charity water is an organization that helps get clean water through newly build wells in community in need.

We have send an email to the organization charity water and we are waiting for their response on:
Can their organization help communities in Mexico?
How much money is needed to build a well?
    How the money is financed?

You might also want to consider the time it takes to build this well for a community (or several). There might be some hidden costs there that you might have not considered. Apart from that, we approve of the focus you have displayed so far.

Have you considered if there are enough wells to fullfill the needed communities with potable water and what are their costs? Are these wells reliable? Remember that if they are not well developed water could be lost and if they are not clean people would get sick and that will backfire your cause. Besides this, we support your interest in supplying these needed communities with water.

These are very good questions to ask.

You might also think about how the local community will need to be involved and if they are interested in that. I did some work like this in Africa and this was a big issue in terms of community buy-in, ongoing maintenance, etc.

I'll look forward to seeing what you hear back.

  • BenjaminLee-1A   March 11, 2013, 11:01 a.m.

This is what our group has come up with as far as budget goes:

Since Child's Play is an organization that helps sick children in hospital by giving them videogames, we've decided to calculate the costs that Child's Play might have in the following categories:

    -Number of videogames bought

    -Cost of individual games

    -Number of console/gaming platforms bought

    -Cost of consoles/gaming platforms

-Books (since Child's Play also uses money to buy books)

Before you give them the money, make sure that the videogames that are bought are appropriate for them. Videogames are usually expensive and that money could be used for better things.

Do you believe that giving kids in the hospital video games is the best way to help them?

Dont you think that this money should go to helping finding a cure or creating better facilities in hospitals?

Our team believe that giving the kids video games is a good way to distract them for whatever reason thei in the hospital,  but before waisting money on video games their more important things that money should go to.

FYI - remember, for some students video games will not be a waste, but for others it might, so why not get involved with someone that can help with an interest survey, and see what the children are into and provides an escape for them during this tough time?  - This could be time spent with them for a movie night there for children, a reading moment paired with an activity, all depends on the various interests of the children there, find that out and it could be similar to Make a Wish Foundation where your groups finds out what these children miss the most, and it is brought to them in the hospital thanks to volunteers, be it video games, an indoor scavenger hunt, whatever!

How will video games help these sick children in the hospital? Perhaps it'd be preferable to buy more books rather than more video games in order to have the kids learn and help them. Some video games would also help since it provides having a fun time while playing and at the same time could encourage learning of some sort. What my group is trying to understand is how the video games help and what type of video games will be bought.

I think that entertainment (whether it's video games, books, or other things) can really help these kids. Not only will it make their hospital stay more pleasant, but there are studies that show that one's mental state is related to how one does physically.

When I was a small kid, I had an operation and had to stay in the hospital. A charity gave me a leather craft kit. This made my stay better, but it also showed me that I could accomplish things.

I think your project is a good idea.
